Body and soul yearn for Hashem
In the Midrash: "My soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You" (Tehillim 63:2) — just as my soul thirsts, so too do the two hundred and forty-eight limbs, etc.
The Sefas Emes notes that the yearning for Hashem is not only spiritual; the very body, all its limbs, longs for Him as well.
I have already written elsewhere that because Yaakov's thirst was both in soul and in body.
Yaakov Avinu's longing for Hashem was complete, encompassing both his neshamah and his physical being.
That is how the dream appeared to him.
The vision of the ladder reflected the two dimensions of his yearning.
For the ladder alludes to the aspect of the body — the two hundred and forty-eight limbs and three hundred and sixty-five sinews — which are the rectification of the "garment."
The body is the malbush (garment) of the soul, and the mitzvos asei and lo sa'asch correspond to its limbs and sinews, perfecting that garment.
And "Hashem stood over him" (Bereishis 28:13) is the aspect of the neshamah and the Torah.
What stands above the ladder-body is the soul and the Torah, the inner light that gives the body its purpose.
And about this Yaakov asked, "and He will give me bread to eat and a garment to wear" (Bereishis 28:20) — alluding, as the Midrash teaches, that "bread" is Torah; once a person merits Torah he merits the garment.
First one acquires Torah (the "bread"/nourishment of the neshamah), and through it one is privileged to the perfected garment of the body.
This is the garment that is fashioned through the mitzvos, for the garment is shaped according to the form of the body.
The mitzvos refine the body limb by limb, so the spiritual "garment" fits the form of the person who performs them.
And just as his desire was in both body and soul.
Because Yaakov's longing was twofold, so too was the revelation he received twofold.
So it is with "In the Sanctuary I beheld You" (Tehillim 63:3).
The same dual yearning is expressed in David HaMelech's words of beholding Hashem.
Thus the vision — "to see Your might and Your glory" — also corresponds to the two aspects mentioned above.
"Might" and "glory" parallel the soul/Torah and the body/garment.
"Might" — this is Torah.
The strength of Bnei Yisrael is the Torah, the inner dimension.
"Glory" is the aspect of the garment, for Rabbi Yochanan called his clothes "my honorers" (Shabbos 113a).
Clothing brings a person honor; here the "garment" of the refined body is the kavod that the mitzvos confer.
And so it is written, "Hashem will give might to His people" (Tehillim 29:11).
The "might" Hashem grants is the Torah given to Bnei Yisrael.
"He will bless His people with peace" — this is the garment, for the body lacks completeness.
"Shalom" denotes wholeness; on its own the body is deficient and needs to be made whole.
And through the Torah one merits the completeness of the body and the garment, as explained above.
Torah is what perfects both the inner soul and the outer body, bringing the person to true shleimus (wholeness).
Summary: Yaakov's thirst for Hashem in both body and soul is mirrored in his dream of the ladder: the body, refined by mitzvos, is the "garment," while Torah and the neshamah are the inner "might" that rests above it. Through Torah a person attains the wholeness of both — the inner light and its perfected outer vessel.
