Humility as Divine Kingship

ויגש אליו יהודה כו' בי אדוני כו'.
“And Judah approached him… ‘Please, my lord…’”
Judah’s approach signals a spiritual posture of submission and receptivity, which becomes the key to the Sefat Emet’s entire teaching in this passage.
כי הנה יוסף ויהודה הם ב' מדריגות.
For Joseph and Judah represent two different spiritual levels.
Joseph embodies a level of innate spiritual greatness, whereas Judah embodies the level of humility and receiving.
איתא יוסף משלו נתנו לו.
It is taught: Joseph was given from his own.
Joseph’s power derives from his own inherent spiritual strength and gifts.
ומדת יהודה מלכות בית דוד דלית לי' מגרמי' כלום.
But Judah’s quality, the kingship of the House of David, is that he has nothing of his own.
Judah’s greatness lies specifically in his total self‑nullification and lack of self‑derived power.
וכל כחו הוא מה שהוא כלי לקבל ומוכן תמיד בהכנעתו אל האדון ית"ש.
All his strength comes from being a vessel to receive, always prepared in humility before the Master, blessed be He.
Judah receives divine flow precisely because his stance is one of continuous surrender.
וז"ש מה נאמר לאדוני כו'.
And this is the meaning of “What can we say to my lord…?”
Judah expresses the recognition that he has no independent claim or merit.
ובכח הכנעה זו תיקן הכל.
And through this humility he rectified everything.
Judah’s self‑nullification becomes a cosmic act of repair.
ומדה זו הוא בחי' יהודה ודוד כמ"ש מו"ז ז"ל יהודה ה' כלול בו.
And this quality is the aspect of Judah and David, as my grandfather taught: “Yehudah—God is contained within him.”
The divine name is embedded within the very letters of Judah.
ואות דל"ת שהוא מלא הכנעה בהיותו יודע שהשם בו.
And the letter Dalet is full of humility, knowing that God is within it.
Dalet signifies lowliness because it is aware of its divine dependence.
וכן אותיות דוד.
And so it is with the letters of David.
David’s name expresses humility and receptivity.
הד' שפלות.
The Dalet represents lowliness.
This is the foundation of David’s spiritual identity.
וזכה אח"כ להמשכת הקדושה שע"ז רומז אות ו'.
And afterward he merited the drawing down of holiness, symbolized by the letter Vav.
The Vav indicates the connection and flow of divine energy into David’s humility.
ומ"מ נשאר אח"כ ד' כמקודם.
Yet he remained afterward a Dalet as before.
Even after receiving holiness, his stance of humility did not change.
וכבר בארנו במ"א ענין אמרם ז"ל כמה לא חלי ולא מרגיש גברא דמארי' סייעי'.
And we have explained elsewhere the saying of our sages: “How insensitive is the man whom the Master assists.”
Divine assistance can paradoxically hide itself from a person who is not sufficiently receptive.
שאול באחת ולא עלתה לו דוד בשתים ועלתה לו.
Saul erred once and it did not succeed for him; David erred twice and it succeeded for him.
This contrast shows that David’s sins did not separate him from God because of his humility and receptivity.
וצריכין להבין למה לא סייע העוזר והסומך גם לשאול.
We must understand why the Helper, the Supporter, did not assist Saul as well.
The question highlights the different spiritual structures of Saul and David.
אך כי הם ב' ענינים.
Rather, they are two different matters.
Saul and David embody fundamentally different spiritual modes.
בחי' שאול הוא כענין יוסף משלו נתנו לו.
The aspect of Saul is like Joseph: “from his own they gave him.”
Saul, like Joseph, possesses a natural, self‑contained greatness.
ובחי' דוד סייעתא דשמיא.
The aspect of David is divine assistance.
David’s greatness flows only from heaven, not from himself.
ולכן עיקר המלכות ליהודה ודוד שכך צריך [להיות].
Therefore kingship primarily belongs to Judah and David, for so it must be.
Kingship must be rooted in humility, not personal greatness.
כי ממלכותו ית' חלק ליראיו לאותן דלית להו מגרמייהו.
For His kingship He grants to His reverent ones—those who have nothing of their own.
True kingship is given to those who acknowledge that all power comes from God.
לידע ולהודיע כי לה' המלוכה.
To know and make known that kingship belongs to the Lord.
The monarch becomes a transparent channel for divine rule.
ובאמת כל אלו הצדיקים היו הכנה עבור כלל ישראל.
And truly all these righteous ones were a preparation for all Israel.
Their personal spiritual journeys enabled all of Israel to access repentance and divine grace.
כי צדיקים גבוהים ורמים כיהודה ודוד לא לחנם נכשלו בתמר ובת שבע.
For exalted tzaddikim like Judah and David did not stumble with Tamar and Bathsheba for nothing.
Their failures served a deeper divine purpose.
רק כמ"ש חז"ל להורות תשובה.
Rather, as the sages taught, to teach repentance.
Their stories open the gates of return for the entire nation.
להיות נצרכים לפתוח שערי מתנת חנם עבור כלל ישראל והם מסייעים לכל השפלים.
To be needed to open the gates of free gift for all Israel, and they assist all the lowly.
They unlocked channels of unearned divine grace that help those who cannot rise on their own.
כי מועטין הם שיוכלו להתמשך אחר בחי' יוסף. משלו נתנו לו.
For few are able to follow the aspect of Joseph—“from his own they gave him.”
Not many can attain spiritual greatness through innate strength alone.
לכן איתא שער ואוצר של מתנת חנם גדול מכל השערים כי רבים צריכין לו.
Therefore it is said: the gate and treasury of free gift is greater than all gates, for many need it.
The path of unearned divine kindness is the broadest and most accessible.
וז"ש בשם האר"י ז"ל בי אדני שהשם בו.
And this is what the Ari taught: “Bi Adoni”—that God’s name is within him.
The phrase hints that Judah contains divine presence precisely through humility.
ובאמת השם אדנות לא נזכר ביהודה.
And truly the name Adnut is not mentioned in Judah.
Despite the allusion, the literal name does not appear.
רק זה עצמו הרמז שיש בו הד' לבד שם הוי"ה.
Rather, this itself is the hint—that he has only the Dalet of the divine name.
The Dalet alone signifies his humility before God.
לומר שהגם שהשם בו. הוא לית לי' מגרמי' כלום ומקבל אדנותו ית' עליו לגמרי.
To say that even though God is within him, he has nothing of his own and fully accepts God’s sovereignty upon himself.
Judah’s greatness lies in being a pure vessel for divine kingship, without personal claim.
Summary: Joseph embodies self‑derived greatness, while Judah and David represent humility and divine assistance. True kingship belongs to those who have nothing of their own, becoming vessels for God’s rule. Their failures opened gates of repentance and free grace for all Israel, showing that the path of humble receptivity is the foundation of spiritual leadership.
