Daily Blessing In Our Hands
In the Midrash: "My lamp is in your hand, etc."
The Sfas Emes opens with a Midrashic teaching in which Hashem says that His lamp is in the hand of Bnei Yisrael, setting up the theme of the piece.
And this connects to the verse "See, I place before you, etc." (Devarim 11:26), as it is brought in the Midrash.
He links this lamp to the opening words of the parsha, "See, I place before you," reading the two together.
The explanation is that the blessing which the Holy One, Blessed is He, renews each and every day with the renewal of Creation in His goodness,
The blessing in question is the daily renewal that Hashem pours into the world each morning as part of His constant re-creation of the world.
is placed into the hand of Bnei Yisrael.
That renewed blessing is entrusted specifically into the hands of Bnei Yisrael.
For they are the first to receive the bounty from the Creator, may He be blessed.
Bnei Yisrael are the first link in the chain, receiving the Divine bounty before it spreads to the rest of Creation.
And according to how prepared they are to receive the good, so is the entire Creation blessed.
The measure of the whole world's blessing depends on how ready Bnei Yisrael are to receive Hashem's goodness.
And every individual Jew must know that the whole world is blessed for his sake.
Each Jew should be aware of his weight: the entire world draws its blessing through him.
And so too, Heaven forbid, the reverse: the bounty is held back through a deficiency in those who are meant to receive it.
Conversely, when the recipients are lacking, the flow of Divine bounty into the world is obstructed.
And this is the meaning of "placing before you this day" — on each and every day, etc.
The verse's word "this day" teaches that this placing of blessing happens fresh every single day.
And regarding the point of renewal that descends from Heaven every day, about this they said "My lamp is in your hand."
The daily point of newness coming down from Heaven is precisely the "lamp" that Hashem places in our hand.
And it is for this purpose that all the morning blessings, Krias Shema, and tefillah were instituted each day — as a preparation to receive the blessing that descends from Heaven each day, as explained above.
Our daily avodah of the morning brachos, Shema, and tefillah was established to ready us to receive this fresh daily blessing.
And it is written "before you" (in the plural), for this general point descends to the totality of Bnei Yisrael when they unite to become one.
The plural "before you" shows that the general blessing reaches Bnei Yisrael as a whole specifically when they bind together into one unit.
Therefore on the seventh day, when they are unified within it, the blessing rests — and that day is Shabbos, as is explained elsewhere.
On Shabbos, the seventh day, Bnei Yisrael are unified, so the blessing rests upon them — and this is the secret of Shabbos.
And this is what the Midrash says: "You shall surely guard, etc., all the mitzvah, etc." — referring to Krias Shema and Shabbos,
The Sfas Emes reads the Midrash's "guard" and "all the mitzvah" as pointing to Krias Shema and Shabbos.
which are the all-encompassing, general mitzvos.
These two are not private mitzvos but all-encompassing ones that gather the klal together.
And this is the sustaining of Creation as a whole, for regarding this they said that the tzaddikim sustain the world that was created with ten utterances.
Because they unify and prepare Bnei Yisrael, they sustain the entire Creation — which is why the tzaddikim are said to uphold the world that Hashem made with ten utterances.
Summary: The Sfas Emes teaches that the blessing Hashem renews within Creation each day is entrusted into the hands of Bnei Yisrael, who are the first to receive the Divine bounty before it flows to the rest of the world. For this reason every Jew must recognize that the entire world is blessed through him, and that a deficiency in the recipients can hold back the flow of good. Our daily avodah of the morning brachos, Krias Shema, and tefillah is meant to prepare us to receive this fresh daily blessing — the "lamp" Hashem places in our hand. Because this general blessing rests upon Bnei Yisrael specifically when they unite as one, it is bound up with Shabbos and with the all-encompassing mitzvos of Krias Shema and Shabbos, through which the tzaddikim sustain the world that Hashem created with ten utterances.
