Ten days of teshuvah renew creation
Rosh Hashanah · teshuvah · Ten Utterances · renewal · baalei teshuvah
עשי"ת נגד עשרה מאמרות ועשרת הדברות.
The Aseres Yemei Teshuvah (Ten Days of Teshuvah) correspond to the Ten Maamaros (Utterances of Creation) and the Aseres Hadibros (Ten Commandments).
The ten days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur parallel the ten Divine utterances by which the world was created and the ten statements of the Torah given at Sinai.
וכל יום מאיר מאמר ודיבור אחד.
And each day one maamar (utterance) and one dibbur (commandment) shines forth.
On each of these ten days, one of the creative utterances and one of the Ten Commandments is illuminated and made available to draw down.
וההפרש כענין במקום שבע"ת עומדין [כו'].
And the difference between them is like the matter of "in the place where baalei teshuvah stand…"
The gap between the original creative utterance and its renewal now is like Chazal's teaching that "in the place where baalei teshuvah stand, even complete tzaddikim cannot stand" — the renewed light surpasses the original.
שהתחדשות חיי השנה עתה בחילא סגי יותר מבשעת הבריאה כנ"ל:
For the renewal of the year's life now comes "with greater power" than at the time of the original Creation, as above.
The fresh vitality drawn into the new year during these days of teshuvah is even stronger than the original creative light — just as the baal teshuvah rises higher than the tzaddik who never fell.
Summary: The Aseres Yemei Teshuvah mirror both the Ten Utterances of Creation and the Ten Commandments, with one of each illuminating per day. Yet the renewal of life drawn down now, through teshuvah, comes "with greater power" than the original Creation — paralleling Chazal's teaching that baalei teshuvah stand where even perfect tzaddikim cannot.
