Yearly renewal of teshuvah and Torah
Rosh Hashanah · teshuvah · renewal · shofar · baalei teshuvah
On the pasuk: "Remember the days of old" (Devarim 32:7).
The Sefas Emes takes up the verse calling us to remember "the days of old," which he will reinterpret in terms of spiritual renewal.
I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, that in every year binah and daas (understanding and knowledge) descend [anew].
His grandfather taught that each year brings a fresh downpouring of understanding and awareness into the world.
And concerning this it is said: "Understand the years of each generation" (Devarim 32:7).
The pasuk's word "binu" (understand) hints that each generation, indeed each year, receives its own portion of binah.
And one may explain "remember the days of old" as referring to the weekdays (yemei hamaaseh), for on each Shabbos the coming weekdays are renewed.
"The days of old" can be read as the working days of the week, which are spiritually renewed every Shabbos for the week ahead.
As it is written: "Remember the day of Shabbos" (Shemos 20:8).
The same language of "remembering" links our verse to the mitzvah of remembering Shabbos.
And this is [the meaning of] "remember the days of old."
To "remember the days of old" is to draw the renewing light of Shabbos into the ordinary days.
"Understand" (binu) refers to Rosh Hashanah and the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah (Ten Days of Teshuvah), in which the days of the year are renewed.
Just as Shabbos renews the week, Rosh Hashanah and the Ten Days renew the entire year, channeling the fresh binah and daas that descend annually.
And it appears that Shabbos is in the aspect of tzaddikim.
Shabbos corresponds to the steady, ordered avodah of the righteous.
And the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah are in the aspect of baalei teshuvah.
The Ten Days correspond to the avodah of return — the path of those who repair through teshuvah.
As it is written: "And God saw all that He had made [and behold it was very good]" (Bereishis 1:31).
The Sefas Emes connects the Ten Days to the verse summing up creation on the sixth day.
And this took place on Erev Shabbos, when Adam HaRishon did teshuvah.
That "very good" was said on the eve of the first Shabbos, the very time when Adam repented for his sin — linking creation's completion to teshuvah.
And one may explain "all that He had made" as including the ten things that were created on Erev Shabbos at twilight (bein hashemashos).
The phrase "all that He made" can be read to encompass the ten special items Chazal list as created at the twilight of the first Shabbos eve.
And it appears that these are tikkunim even for after the sin.
These ten twilight creations were prepared as remedies that would remain effective even once mankind had sinned.
For from all these things a trace remained even after the sin.
Each of these twilight items leaves an enduring imprint that survives the fall and offers a path of repair.
And the ram of Avraham proves it.
The ram of the Akeidah, one of those ten twilight creations, served Avraham long after the sin — proof that these remedies endure.
And just as there is [a parallel] in the time of the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, so too there are in the world these ten things.
The ten twilight creations in the dimension of space mirror the ten days of teshuvah in the dimension of time — both are paths of rectification.
And in truth, the building of the world is in seven days.
The natural order of creation is structured upon the seven days of the week.
And the conduct during the Ten Days of Teshuvah is above the conduct of nature, [adding] three "heads" over the seven days.
The Ten Days operate by a supernatural mode: three days "above" the natural seven, corresponding to a higher, transcendent governance.
And on Erev Shabbos at twilight, through the teshuvah that Adam HaRishon did, the path of baalei teshuvah was rectified with an added elevation, in the aspect of "ten" — as stated in the Zohar that baalei teshuvah rectify in a single moment; see there in Parshas Vayeira.
Adam's twilight teshuvah opened the higher "ten" pathway of return, by which, as the Zohar teaches, a baal teshuvah can accomplish in one instant what otherwise takes long labor.
Therefore in a single hour these ten were rectified, which is more than what is rectified in all the weekdays.
The instantaneous power of teshuvah accomplishes more in one moment than the ordered avodah of the entire week.
And likewise, always, in these ten days one can rectify more than in all the [other] days of the year.
Every year the Ten Days of Teshuvah carry that same elevated power — accomplishing more repair than the rest of the year combined.
And the day of Rosh Hashanah includes the whole year, just as the head (rosh) includes the entire body.
As its name implies, Rosh Hashanah is the "head" of the year, containing and directing all that follows, like the head over the body.
And just as there are three Regalim in the year — Chag HaMatzos, [recalling] Yetzias Mitzrayim; then Kabbalas HaTorah; then the completion of the tikkun on Sukkos, the time of our rejoicing —
The three festivals trace a progression: liberation at Pesach, receiving the Torah at Shavuos, and the culmination of rectification and joy at Sukkos.
And this is the course of the entire world: first there were two thousand years of tohu (chaos/void), then Bnei Yisrael merited two thousand years of Torah, and afterward two thousand years of the days of Mashiach.
The three festivals mirror history's three great epochs — the pre-Torah era of tohu, the era of Torah, and the messianic era — each a stage in the world's refinement.
And all of this is renewed each year.
The entire historical progression is re-enacted and renewed within the cycle of every year.
And all of this is also renewed on the day of Rosh Hashanah — at first "in concealment" (bakeseh) — and we must arouse, through the blowing of the shofar, the merit of the Torah.
On Rosh Hashanah this renewal begins hidden (the moon "covered"), and the shofar's blast is meant to awaken the zechus of Torah and draw the concealed light into revelation.
And at the end of the day [we are told]: "Eat rich foods… the joy of Hashem is your strength" (Nechemiah 8:10).
After the awe of the day's beginning, Rosh Hashanah concludes in joy and confidence — the simchah of closeness to Hashem becomes the source of our strength for the year ahead.
Summary: Each year fresh binah and daas descend, renewed through Rosh Hashanah and the Ten Days of Teshuvah just as the weekdays are renewed every Shabbos. Shabbos reflects the ordered avodah of tzaddikim, while the Ten Days reflect baalei teshuvah — a supernatural "three over seven" governance whose power was opened by Adam's twilight teshuvah, so that, as the Zohar teaches, more can be rectified in one moment than in all the weekdays. Rosh Hashanah is the "head" containing the whole year, recapitulating the three festivals and the three epochs of history (tohu, Torah, Mashiach); its hidden renewal is aroused by the shofar and the merit of Torah, and the day culminates in the joy of Hashem that is our strength.
