The fourfold structure of Torah and creation
Haazinu · four levels · pardes · bitachon · four kingdoms
On the pasuk: "Let [my teaching] drop like rain... like dew... like storm-winds... and like raindrops..." (Devarim 32:2).
The Sefas Emes begins with the four different images Moshe Rabbeinu uses to describe Torah descending — rain, dew, showers, and droplets.
They are four divisions, just as there are four levels of interpretation in Torah: pshat, remez, derush, and sod.
The four metaphors correspond to the four classic dimensions of Torah interpretation — the plain meaning, the hint, the homiletical, and the hidden (the "pardes").
And likewise there are four distinctions among Bnei Yisrael.
Just as Torah has four levels, so too the people who receive it fall into four corresponding types.
There are those who receive the words of Torah with difficulty.
Some absorb Torah only through great struggle — like the harsher "storm-winds."
And there are those who [receive them] with ease.
Others absorb Torah gently and pleasantly — like soft "dew."
And so it is in the four worlds, for the Torah is present in all the worlds.
The fourfold structure also maps onto the four spiritual worlds (Atzilus, Beriah, Yetzirah, Asiyah), since Torah pervades every one of them.
And in the world of Asiyah (action) is the most elementary level of Torah.
In the lowest world, the world of action, Torah appears in its plainest, most concrete form — its physical mitzvos.
And it is about this that "yaarof" (let it drop heavily) is said — that through toil in the simple [level].
The heavy, dripping language of "yaarof" alludes to the effort required to absorb Torah at the level of action, where it demands physical exertion.
The Torah and mitzvos before us in physical form rectify the body and its limbs; and this is the meaning of what is said afterward, "The Rock, His work is perfect" (Devarim 32:4).
The physical mitzvos work a tikkun on the body and limbs of a person, and Moshe immediately follows with praise of Hashem as the perfect "Rock" whose handiwork lacks nothing.
For all of Hashem's deeds encompass all places and all times.
Hashem's actions are not bound to a moment or a place; they comprehend the totality of space and time.
And consequently, since He chose Bnei Yisrael and gave us the Torah, this was not by chance.
Because Hashem's deeds are perfect and all-encompassing, His choosing of Bnei Yisrael and giving of the Torah could not be a random event.
And we must trust (have bitachon) that everything will be rectified.
From the perfection of Hashem's deeds flows the bitachon that ultimately all of creation will reach its complete tikkun.
And this is the testimony of the song of Haazinu.
The shirah of Haazinu serves as a witness to this faith — that history is guided toward an assured, perfect end.
And this too is [the meaning of] the four expressions: "a God of faithfulness and without injustice, righteous and upright" (Devarim 32:4).
The four praises of Hashem in this pasuk parallel the fourfold structure, each affirming His perfect, trustworthy governance.
"Is He not your Father who acquired you, [who] made you and established you?" (Devarim 32:6).
Another fourfold expression — Father, acquirer, maker, establisher — describing Hashem's complete relationship to Bnei Yisrael across every level.
Just as we praise Him: "that He did not make us like the nations of the lands, and did not place us like the families [of the earth]... that He did not assign our portion like theirs, nor our lot like all their multitude" — these are four kinds of separation, in all four elements, and in the body and in the neshamah (nefesh-ruach-neshamah).
The fourfold praise of "Aleinu" expresses four levels of distinction that set Bnei Yisrael apart from the nations — paralleling the four elements of the body and the levels of the soul.
And therefore there are also four kingdoms (malchuyos) that oppose the four levels within kedushah.
The four exiles — Bavel, Madai, Yavan, and Edom — stand in opposition to these four levels of holiness, each malchus contesting one of the four dimensions of Bnei Yisrael's sanctity.
Summary: The four images of Torah descending in Haazinu — rain, dew, showers, droplets — correspond to the four levels of Torah interpretation (pshat, remez, derush, sod), to four types of Jews who receive Torah, and to the four spiritual worlds. The physical mitzvos of the lowest world rectify the body and demand toil, and from Hashem's perfect, all-encompassing deeds we draw the bitachon that everything will be rectified. This fourfold pattern runs through the praises of Hashem, the four distinctions setting Bnei Yisrael apart, and even the four kingdoms of galus that oppose the four levels of kedushah.
