Torah as the root of all creation
Sukkos · Shemini Atzeres · bittul · deveikus · Torah
"In His shade I delighted and sat" — this refers to the days of Sukkos.
The Sefas Emes reads the verse from Shir HaShirim (2:3) "b'tzilo chimadti v'yashavti" as alluding to dwelling in the sukkah, which is "His shade."
"And His fruit was sweet to my palate" — this refers to Shemini Atzeres.
The "fruit," the sweet inner taste that follows the shade, corresponds to Shemini Atzeres, the culmination of the festival.
For all matters of this world come entirely from the Torah, as the saying goes: "He looked into the Torah and created the world…" (Bereishis Rabbah 1:1).
The Midrash teaches that Hashem used the Torah as the blueprint of creation, so everything in the world has its root in Torah.
And the reason the Torah is called "reishis" (beginning) is that the root and beginning of all created things lie within the Torah.
Torah is named "reishis" because it is the source from which every creature draws its existence.
And it is the beginning and foundation of everything.
The Torah is the foundational reality upon which all of creation stands.
And this was given to Bnei Yisrael, and this is the meaning of "the power of His works He told…" (Tehillim 111:6).
Hashem gave this Torah-root of creation to Bnei Yisrael, revealing to them "the power of His works" — the inner force behind all that exists.
And because Bnei Yisrael nullify themselves before Hakadosh Baruch Hu and desire to cleave to Him and to attach every deed to its supernal root —
Through bittul (self-nullification) and the longing for deveikus (cleaving to Hashem), Bnei Yisrael strive to connect every action back to its source above.
through this the reasons of the Torah are revealed to them.
This bittul and deveikus open up to them the inner "taste" and meaning of the Torah.
And they come to know the attachment of all things to Hakadosh Baruch Hu through the Torah.
They perceive how everything in the world is bound to Hashem by means of the Torah.
And this is the meaning of "In His shade I delighted… and His fruit was sweet…"
The "shade" of Sukkos is the shelter of bittul, and the "sweet fruit" of Shemini Atzeres is the revealed inner taste of Torah that follows it.
Summary: The verse "In His shade I delighted… and His fruit was sweet" maps onto Sukkos and Shemini Atzeres. Since the Torah is the blueprint and root of all creation, when Bnei Yisrael nullify themselves before Hashem and attach every deed to its supernal root, the inner "taste" of the Torah is revealed to them — the sweet fruit that follows dwelling in His shade.
