Shemini Atzeres and the World to Come
Shemini Atzeres · Olam Haba · neshamah yeseirah · Torah · Simchas Torah
"On the eighth day there shall be an atzeres (gathering) for you" (Bamidbar 29:35).
The Sefas Emes focuses on the words "for you" — Shemini Atzeres is given over uniquely to Bnei Yisrael, and the whole piece will unpack why.
The "eighth" alludes to the World to Come, meaning that Bnei Yisrael have the power to draw down an illumination from the Olam Haba.
Seven represents the natural order of this world (the seven days of the week and of Sukkos); the eighth reaches beyond nature to Olam Haba. Bnei Yisrael are able to draw that higher light down into the present.
As it is stated: "All Yisrael have a portion in the World to Come" (Sanhedrin 90a).
The Mishnah's wording is the proof-text for this power, and the next line draws a precise inference from its phrasing.
They did not say "they will have a portion," but rather "they have" — already now, while they are still in this world.
The present tense "have" (rather than the future "will have") teaches that the portion in Olam Haba is a present possession, accessible even now in Olam Hazeh.
Therefore "it shall be for you" — a testimony that Bnei Yisrael are the children of the World to Come.
Shemini Atzeres, the "eighth," serves as living testimony that Bnei Yisrael already belong to Olam Haba even in this world.
And on the festival of Sukkos, blessing comes for the entire year.
Sukkos is the channel through which the year's blessing flows — and the Sefas Emes now distinguishes how that blessing is shared.
All the nations have a share in the seven days, since that blessing spreads through the conduct of nature.
The seventy bulls offered over the seven days of Sukkos bring blessing to all the nations, because that blessing operates within the natural order, which is shared by all the world.
But on Shemini Atzeres there is an illumination from the World to Come, and in this there is no foreign contact — it is for Bnei Yisrael alone.
The light of the eighth day comes from beyond nature, from Olam Haba, and into that supernatural realm the nations have no entry. It belongs exclusively to Bnei Yisrael.
And it is brought in the name of the Arizal on the pasuk "Give a portion to seven" (Koheles 11:2) — meaning that in the seven, all have a portion.
The Arizal reads "seven" as the seven days of Sukkos, in which everyone — including the nations — receives a share, as explained above.
"And also to eight" — explained from the expression "cut it flush" (i.e. a cutting away), for on the eighth all the orlah (foreskin) and klipah (husk) is removed, and there is a portion for none but you.
The continuation of the pasuk, "and also to eight," hints at bris milah on the eighth day — a cutting away of the orlah. So too on the eighth day of the festival, every husk and barrier is stripped off, leaving the pure light for Bnei Yisrael alone.
And it is brought that the eighth is a blessing unto itself.
Chazal teach that Shemini Atzeres is a festival in its own right ("regel bifnei atzmo"), with its own distinct blessing, separate from Sukkos.
And it appears that the three festivals correspond to the aspects of nefesh, ruach, and neshamah (the three levels of the soul).
The Sefas Emes maps Pesach, Shavuos, and Sukkos onto the three ascending levels of the soul — nefesh, ruach, and neshamah.
And Shemini Atzeres corresponds to the neshamah yeseirah (extra soul), as the Midrash says on Shemini Atzeres, "You have added to the nation…" — see there — for it is an addition beyond the festivals.
Since Shemini Atzeres is "added" onto the three regalim, it parallels the neshamah yeseirah, an extra, higher soul-illumination beyond the three standard levels — just as the Midrash reads the pasuk "You have added to the nation."
And because it is the aspect of the neshamah yeseirah, therefore "it shall be for you."
This explains the exclusivity of "for you": the neshamah yeseirah is a private gift that the nations cannot grasp, so the day belongs to Bnei Yisrael alone.
As it is brought in the Gemara, "the neshamah yeseirah was not made known to them" — for they have no perception of the aspect of the extra soul.
The Gemara (Beitzah 16a) states that the nations were not informed about the extra soul of Shabbos. So too here: the supernal illumination of Shemini Atzeres is beyond the reach of the nations' perception.
And it appears that this is why we make Simchas Torah on Shemini Atzeres, for the entire connection of Bnei Yisrael to the World to Come is through the power of the perfect Torah that "restores the soul" (Tehillim 19:8), which preceded the world.
Simchas Torah is set precisely on this day because it is the Torah — which predated creation and "restores the soul" — that gives Bnei Yisrael their bond with Olam Haba. The "extra soul" of the day flows from the Torah itself.
And through the power of the Torah we have a portion in the World to Come.
The closing point: it is precisely our grip on the Torah that secures for Bnei Yisrael their present-tense portion in Olam Haba, the very portion that Shemini Atzeres testifies to.
Summary: Shemini Atzeres, the "eighth" day, draws down an illumination from Olam Haba that is beyond nature and therefore belongs to Bnei Yisrael alone, unlike the seven days of Sukkos whose blessing spreads through nature to all the nations. As the neshamah yeseirah added onto the three regalim, this day testifies that Bnei Yisrael are already "children of the World to Come" even now — and it is the power of the Torah, celebrated on Simchas Torah, that secures that eternal portion.
