Establishing Divine Kingship Through Redemption

Beshalach · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 5

In the Midrash: “Your throne is established.”

The Sefat Emet opens with the Midrash that explains how God’s throne becomes firmly established in the world.

Even though You have existed forever.

God’s existence is eternal, yet His revealed sovereignty manifests within history.

Your throne became settled from ‘Then Moses will sing.’

The establishment of God’s throne occurs through the Song at the Sea, when His kingship became visible to creation.

A parable: A king stands at the tablet, but the emperor sits, etc.

The Midrash compares God’s kingship to rulers who stand when their rule is insecure but sit when it is secure.

We have spoken of this: a king stands to guard his kingdom lest another seize it.

Human kings must actively protect their rule because it is vulnerable.

But one whose name has grown through his victories, and all fear him, sits on his throne and need not guard the kingdom.

When authority is fully recognized, the ruler can rest securely.

The explanation is in the verse: “Hashem reigns; He is robed in majesty.”

This describes the stages by which God’s kingship becomes revealed.

“He girds Himself with strength; the world is established and cannot falter.”

Strength and majesty together establish cosmic stability.

“Hashem reigned” refers to the Exodus.

The Exodus was the first great revelation of divine kingship.

He clothed Himself in majesty at the splitting of the sea, as it says “He has triumphed gloriously.”

The Sea offered a greater revelation of God’s greatness.

He girded Himself with strength at the giving of the Torah, which is called strength.

Torah is the inner foundation of divine kingship.

And through this the world becomes firmly established.

The combination of Exodus, Sea, and Sinai stabilizes creation.

For through the Exodus, the Sea, and the Torah, the honor of His kingship became clarified among creations.

These three events reveal God’s sovereignty to all beings.

And this knowledge sustains the world.

The world endures because divine kingship is known within it.

Thus it says “Then he will sing,” and not “sang.”

The future tense hints that this song was anticipated since creation.

For from the creation of the world they awaited this song.

The Song at the Sea was the culmination of primordial expectation.

For the song was not about Israel’s rescue.

The essence of the song was not personal salvation.

For the verse “The enemy said: I will pursue” appears later.

The threat and its defeat were not the song’s main theme.

To teach that the essence of the song was the revelation of God’s kingship in the world.

The true joy was the universal manifestation of divine sovereignty.

This is what Israel rejoiced over.

Their joy came from witnessing divine kingship revealed.

And Israel longed for this song from the beginning.

Their longing was for the moment God’s glory would be known.

But so long as they were enslaved to human kings, they could not sing it.

Oppression blocks the ability to express divine praise fully.

And once the wicked were destroyed and Israel was elevated,

Only after freedom and uplift could the song emerge.

Then they brought the song from potential into actuality.

The long‑awaited song finally manifested.

And thus Rashi says “It arose in His heart,” as above.

This confirms that the song was part of God’s primordial intent.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the Song at the Sea was the long‑awaited revelation of God’s kingship, foreseen from creation. The Exodus, the splitting of the sea, and the giving of the Torah progressively established divine sovereignty, which in turn stabilizes the world. Israel’s song expresses not personal salvation but cosmic recognition of God’s rule.
