Settling Divine Rule Within

במדרש נכון כסאך אע"פ שמעולם אתה לא נתיישבה כסאך עד אז ישיר כו' משל כו' ע"ש.

In the Midrash: “Your throne is established,” although Your throne was never fully settled until “then Moses sang,” etc.

The Sefat Emet begins with the Midrash teaching that God’s kingship becomes “settled” only when humans recognize it, which occurred at the Song at the Sea.

פי' כי בוודאי מעולם ממשלתו ית' מגעת על כל.

The meaning is that certainly God’s sovereignty always extends over all.

Divine rule is constant and unchanging; the issue lies not with God, but with human awareness.

אבל להיות מיושב וקבוע בלבות אנשים אשר ירגישו כי הנהגתו ית' שולטת בהם ועליהם.

But for it to be settled and fixed in the hearts of people, who feel that His governance rules over and within them—

True “settling” of God’s throne means internal recognition within the human heart.

זה ניתקן ביצ"מ וקי"ס.

This was rectified through the Exodus and the Splitting of the Sea.

These events awakened deep inner awareness of God’s rule.

דאיתא ב' אלפים תהו ב' אלפים תורה.

As it is taught: two thousand years of chaos, two thousand years of Torah.

History unfolds from spiritual incompleteness to structured divine order.

כי בכל דבר יש חומר וצורה.

For in everything there is matter and form.

The Sefat Emet applies the classical model of physical matter and spiritual form.

ובהתישבות הצורה תוך החומר להיותם מסכימים לדבר אחד.

And when the form settles within the matter, so that they agree as one—

Harmony is achieved when the spiritual form shapes the physical vessel.

בהתודע אל החומר כי הוא רק דמיון וציור להרוח פנימיות שבו.

Through recognizing that the material is only an image and representation of the inner spirit within it.

The physical world is a projection of inner spiritual reality.

זה נק' ישוב.

This is called “settling.”

“Settlement” means alignment of inner and outer reality.

וע"ז נאמר לא תהו בראה לשבת יצרה.

And about this it is said: “He did not create it for chaos; He formed it to be settled.”

Creation’s purpose is alignment and harmony, not confusion.

והוא באמת בחי' השבת.

And this is truly the quality of Shabbat.

Shabbat embodies the return of all things to their spiritual source.

שבו שב כל דבר לשורשו.

For on it everything returns to its root.

Shabbat reveals essence beneath external form.

כמ"ש במ"א פי' הזוה"ק שבו איש תחתיו אל יצא איש ממקומו כו'.

As explained elsewhere in the Zohar: “Let each person remain in his place,” etc.

The Zohar teaches that on Shabbat, each element stays aligned with its true inner position.

ובהתישבות הנ"ל יש ברכה וריבוי ועושה תולדות.

And in this settling there is blessing, expansion, and the power to produce offspring.

Spiritual integration creates fruitfulness and abundance.

וכמו שהי' בכלל אחר השירה שהוא ישוב הנ"ל.

As happened generally after the Song, which was this settling.

The Song at the Sea unified Israel’s inner and outer awareness.

זכו אח"כ לקבלת התורה שהוא תוספת התחדשות הארה אלקיות.

They then merited receiving the Torah, which is added renewal of divine light.

The Torah gives continual spiritual renewal beyond the foundational “settling.”

וכן הוא לעולם אחר תיקון הגוף להמשיכו אחר צורת הנפש.

And so it always is: after the body is repaired to follow the form of the soul—

The body becomes a vessel aligned with the soul’s intention.

שבאמת הגוף רק התלבשות רמ"ח איברים ושס"ה גידין נגד תרי"ג מצות.

For the body is truly only a garment of the 248 limbs and 365 sinews paralleling the 613 commandments.

The body mirrors the mitzvah-structure of divine will.

וכמו כן בכלל כמ"ש בצלם אלקים עשה כו'.

And so it is generally, as it is said: “In the image of God He made [the human].”

Human structure reflects divine intention.

ואחר התישבות הצורה בחומר מאירה הנשמה בתוספת אור חדש.

And after the form settles within the matter, the soul shines with an added new light.

Integration leads to expanded spiritual illumination.

ויצ"מ הי' תיקון הבריאה.

The Exodus was the rectification of creation.

It repaired the fundamental relationship between matter and spirit.

וקי"ס ביום הז' הי' נגד השבת.

And the Splitting of the Sea on the seventh day corresponded to Shabbat.

The Sea’s splitting revealed the inner essence of reality, like Shabbat.

כמ"ש במד' סוף פ' בא.

As stated in the Midrash at the end of Parashat Bo.

The Midrash links these events to the structure of the week.

והענין הוא דכ' ואתם תחרישון.

The idea is what is written: “And you shall be silent.”

Silence before God is a key aspect of this divine salvation.

שמקודם הי' הישועה ע"י מצות בנ"י בדם פסח ומילה.

For earlier the salvation came through the mitzvot of Israel—through the blood of the Passover offering and circumcision.

The Exodus involved human action and preparation.

ועתה הי' בלי מעשה תחתונים.

But now it was without any action from below.

The Sea was split purely by divine initiative.

כמו בשבת שנאסר כל מלאכה.

Like Shabbat, on which all labor is forbidden.

Deliverance comes through stillness, not effort.

רק לבטל עצמו לשורש עליון.

Only to nullify oneself to the higher root.

True redemption requires surrender to God.

ובוודאי לא לחנם צעקו בנ"י.

And certainly Israel did not cry out for nothing.

Their fear had deep spiritual purpose.

וייראו מאוד.

And they were very afraid.

The awe was overwhelming despite the miracles they had seen.

אף שראו הנסים וגבורות שעשה הבורא ית' עמהם.

Even though they had seen the miracles and mighty deeds that God had done for them.

Past miracles cannot guarantee future certainty.

רק בוודאי באו למדרגה זו שלא היו יכולין לידע שום הצלה.

But surely they reached a level where they could not perceive any possible salvation.

They confronted the limits of human understanding.

וראו שאין בכחם למצוא ישועה רק בעזר עליון בלבד.

And they saw that they had no power to find deliverance except through divine help alone.

Total dependence on God became clear.

כמ"ש ויושע ה' ביום ההוא.

As it is written: “And God saved them on that day.”

The salvation was entirely from above.

שהי' ישועה שלמעלה מבחי' נגיעת מעשה התחתונים.

For it was a salvation beyond any involvement of human action.

This deliverance was purely divine, like the rest of Shabbat.

וכן הכלל לעולם כי כאשר אדם מתחיל בעבודת הבורא ית'.

And so is the general rule forever: when a person begins serving God—

The spiritual path always includes this transition.

בא אח"כ למדריגות שצריך להיות נושע רק בחסד עליון בלבד.

He then comes to levels where he must be saved only by higher grace.

Human effort reaches its limit, and grace completes the work.

כמ"ש לאל גומר עלי.

As it is said: “To God Who completes on my behalf.”

God finishes what humans cannot.

והוא באמת בחי' השבת.

And this is truly the quality of Shabbat.

Shabbat symbolizes divine completion beyond human action.

שצריך הגנה פורם סוכת שלום כו' כמ"ש במ"א.

That one needs protection—“He spreads a canopy of peace,” etc., as explained elsewhere.

On Shabbat, divine protection surrounds the soul.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that divine kingship becomes “settled” only when humans internally recognize God’s rule. This alignment of form and matter—soul and body—is the essence of Shabbat and was revealed through the Exodus and the Splitting of the Sea. The Sea’s miracle showed salvation beyond human effort, establishing total dependence on divine grace, a pattern echoed throughout spiritual life.
