Shabbos Source of Sustenance

Beshalach · תרמ"ח (1887) · Essay 1

Further on the above matter, as it is written in the section of the manna: “See that the Lord has given you the Sabbath.”

The Sefat Emet begins by linking the Sabbath to the miracle of the manna, showing that Shabbat itself is a Divine gift.

For the eating of the manna was spiritual, like that of the ministering angels.

The manna is described as angelic food, meaning it nourished the soul as much as the body.

And the manna was created on the eve of the Sabbath, as the Sages taught.

Its creation time signals its essential connection to Shabbat.

For the entire world is sustained by the Divine flow, but it becomes clothed in nature, and therefore is limited in measure and boundary.

Normal sustenance is filtered through natural processes, which constrain it.

But before contraction, everything exists in a single point.

The Sefat Emet invokes the mystical idea of pre‑contraction unity, where all sustenance is undifferentiated.

Therefore, the one who gathered more had no surplus, and so on.

The equality of the gathered manna reflected its origin in the uncontracted Divine point.

And therefore it changed into many tastes, as the Sages said: “Like a mother's milk, which shifts into many flavors.”

Because it came from a place beyond limits, the manna could manifest differently for each person.

For when Shabbat arrives, bodies are not made for them; they are spirits without bodily contraction, and therefore they change.

Shabbat lifts creation toward a more spiritual state, which allows greater variability and subtlety.

And so too the manna, which had no contraction, would transform accordingly.

The manna mirrored this Shabbat‑like expansiveness.

And this was from the side of holiness, like the extra soul of Shabbat, which likewise cannot fully clothe itself in the body.

The manna shares qualities with the “neshamah yetirah,” the Shabbat soul that surpasses physical vessels.

But the Children of Israel are vessels able to receive even the root that is not physical.

Israel’s spiritual capacity allows them to receive Divine influence at its source.

And this is the aspect of Shabbat, the root of all Divine influences.

Shabbat reconnects creation to its highest origin.

And therefore it is written: “Let no man go out from his place.”

The verse introduces a spiritual principle: remaining rooted in the Shabbat point.

The Zohar explains: “Blessed be the Glory of the Lord from His place,” the place that contains all places—and this is given to Israel.

Israel is granted access to the transcendent Divine “place” that encompasses all realms.

Therefore Shabbat is called “peace,” for it is the purpose of creation.

Shalom here means wholeness, the completed state of creation.

As it is said: What was the world lacking? Rest. When Shabbat came, the work was completed.

Shabbat brings the missing element that perfects creation.

Therefore Israel is called “the Shulamit,” for they are the vessel to receive that point.

Israel can receive the primal Shabbat‑point, the unified root of all blessing.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the manna reflects the essence of Shabbat—uncontracted Divine flow from the primal point before limitation. Israel, uniquely, can receive this root‑influence, making Shabbat the completion and peace of creation.
