Giving shekalim frees and renews
Shekalim · Nedavah · Renewal · Cheirus · Simcha
On the first of Adar they announce concerning the shekalim and concerning the kilayim (forbidden mixtures in the fields).
The Sefas Emes begins from the Mishnah's public proclamation at the start of Adar about giving the half-shekel and about uprooting kilayim.
Even though the actual terumah (drawing from the new shekalim) begins in Nisan —
The communal offerings were funded from the new shekalim only from Nisan, yet the call goes out already in Adar.
"Renew yourself and bring an offering from the new contribution."
From Nisan onward, the korbanos tzibbur must come from a fresh round of donations — a yearly renewal.
Only that Bnei Yisrael must arouse this renewal through their donation, for in the month of Adar, when all Bnei Yisrael brought their shekalim, a great eis ratzon (time of favor) was awakened.
The people themselves must stir the renewal from below through their giving; when all of Klal Yisrael brought the half-shekel together in Adar, it generated a powerful moment of Divine favor.
And also because the time itself stirs the hearts of Bnei Yisrael to give generously to Hashem.
There is a reciprocal flow: just as the people's giving awakens favor, so too the season itself awakens the people's hearts toward generosity.
And both are true.
Both the arousal from below (the people's nedavah) and the arousal from above (the season's special power) are genuine and work together.
And this then brings about renewal.
The combined arousal of Adar produces the fresh spiritual beginning that comes to fruition in Nisan.
It is written, "A person's gift makes room for him."
The verse teaches that giving generously opens up space and expansiveness for the giver himself.
According to what a person gives of his own, he goes forth from all the straits.
By giving from what is his, a person breaks out of all his constrictions — the "meitzarim" that bind him.
And this relates to "the kilayim," as the Zohar explains it like a "beis hakeleh" (prison) — that through the donation one becomes a free man.
Reading "kilayim" as akin to "kele" (prison/confinement), the act of generous giving releases a person from his inner prison into freedom.
And this is a preparation for Pesach.
This release from confinement readies a person for the freedom of Pesach, which Adar precedes.
For even now there is the will and the generosity, in that Bnei Yisrael are ready to give the shekalim.
Even in our times, without the Bais Hamikdash, the inner readiness and ratzon of Bnei Yisrael to give the half-shekel remains alive.
even though it cannot be fulfilled in actual deed.
The mitzvah cannot be physically performed today, yet the will to give still carries weight.
And therefore it brings joy, as it is written, "and to the upright of heart, gladness" — for when one goes free from the yetzer hara, one comes to uprightness of heart.
Liberation from the yetzer hara — the true "prison" — yields a yashrus halev, a straightness of heart, and with it genuine simcha.
Summary: Though the new communal offerings begin only in Nisan, the call for shekalim goes out already in the first of Adar, because Bnei Yisrael must arouse the yearly renewal through their own generous giving — an arousal that meets the season's own awakening of the heart. Generous giving "makes room" for a person, freeing him from his constrictions, breaking him out of the inner prison hinted at by "kilayim," and readying him for the freedom of Pesach. Even today, when the mitzvah cannot be performed, the will to give endures, and liberation from the yetzer hara brings uprightness of heart and joy.
