Joy of Adar repairs galus

It is brought in the Gemara: just as when Av enters we decrease in simchah (joy), so too when Adar enters we increase in simchah.

The Sefas Emes opens with the Chazal (Taanis 29a) that pairs the decline of joy in Av with its rise in Adar, signaling that these two months are mirror images of one another.

We have explained it according to the measure in which we decrease in simchah in Av.

The amount of joy added in Adar corresponds exactly to the amount of joy withdrawn in Av — the two are bound together.

So too we increase in simchah in Adar, as it is written, "Rejoice with her, all you who mourn for her" (Yeshayahu 66:10), and it is written, "Our dancing was turned into mourning" (Eichah 5:15).

The very mourning of Av is the raw material that is later transformed into the joy of Adar; the same energy that was lowered into aveilus (mourning) is precisely what is raised back up into celebration.

We have explained that what they were able to attain in the time of the Bais Hamikdash through the power of simchah —

In the era of the Bais Hamikdash, the avodah (service) was driven by joy, and through that joy lofty spiritual attainments were within reach.

— we now attain by means of aveilus (mourning).

In galus the same heights are reachable, but the gateway has changed: what joy accomplished then, mourning over the loss accomplishes now.

The essence of the simchah of Adar was in the preparation of the shekalim for the terumas halishkah (the chamber-offering), and all the avodos and preparations for the Bais Hamikdash brought joy.

The joy of Adar is not abstract — it flows specifically from the half-shekel collection and from every act of readying the Mikdash, since serving Hashem is itself the source of true simchah.

As it is written, "the joy of all the earth" (Tehillim 48:3) — that from there joy goes forth to the entire world.

The Bais Hamikdash is the wellspring from which simchah radiates outward to the whole world; it is the center point from which all joy is distributed.

And even now, when we do not have the actual avodah of the Bais Hamikdash, we must nevertheless find the ratzon (will) and the yearning even now.

Though we cannot perform the physical service, the inner desire and longing for it remain fully within our reach and are demanded of us.

And it is brought: a good thought, the Holy One joins it to a deed.

Chazal teach that Hashem treats a sincere good intention as though it had been carried out in action, so the yearning itself is counted as the avodah.

And it is possible that even across the order of the generations, in Heaven they join the longings in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael of the present to those generations who fulfilled the avodah in practice.

Our yearning today is not lost but is attached above to the generations who actually served in the Mikdash, so that we share in their accomplishment.

And it is possible to say that because we sinned while the Mikdash still stood, and the avodah was not performed with simchah and complete ratzon as it should have been —

The Sefas Emes suggests the destruction came precisely because the service, though physically performed, lacked its inner joy and wholehearted will.

— therefore we must now repair it through ratzon and yearning, without the avodah in practice.

Since the flaw was a missing inner will, the tikkun (rectification) of galus is to supply exactly that — pure desire and longing — even absent the physical act.

And in these days the ratzon and the giving are awakened in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael, as it is brought, "We announce concerning the shekalim" — that is, as it is written, "Listen, O daughter" (Tehillim 45:11) — for Bnei Yisrael are called "the daughter of the generous one" (bas nadiv), in that they are able to hear the voices and the arousal that come from Heaven.

The public announcement about the shekalim (Shekalim 1:1) awakens an inner generosity; Bnei Yisrael are uniquely attuned to "hear" the call descending from Above and respond with open-hearted giving.

"And forget your people…" (Tehillim 45:11) — that is, as the Mishnah concludes, "and concerning the mixed species (kilayim)" — that the giving and the ratzon should be without any dross or admixture of other desires, but for the sake of Heaven alone.

Just as the announcement about kilayim warns against mixtures, so the inner giving must be pure and unmixed — "forgetting" all foreign motives so that the ratzon is directed l'shem Shomayim alone.

Summary: The joy of Adar, rooted in the half-shekel and the preparations for the Bais Hamikdash, is the mirror of the mourning of Av — and in galus, when the physical avodah is impossible, our pure inner will and longing for the Mikdash become the very tikkun for the flawed, joyless service that caused its loss.
