Half-shekel as the will to draw near
Shekalim · korbanos · yearning · deveikus · chosenness
In the Midrash: when Parshas Shekalim is read, Moshe Rabbeinu lifts up the head of Bnei Yisrael.
The reading of Shekalim each year has the power to "raise the head" of Bnei Yisrael — to elevate and dignify them — and this elevation flows through Moshe Rabbeinu.
For the foundation of all the korbanos (offerings) was from the donations of the shekalim, which represent the yearning and the will found in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael toward Hashem.
The communal offerings were purchased from the half-shekel donations; thus the very basis of every korban is the deep longing and ratzon (desire) for Hashem that lives in the heart of every Jew.
Therefore, even though the main terumah was given in Nissan, the preparation for it lay in this donation.
Although the shekalim were actually collected toward Nissan for the new year's offerings, the inner preparation — the awakening of the will to give — is what the mitzvah is really about.
And now, in our great sorrow, when we do not have the korbanos in actual practice — nevertheless the will and the desire to give are found forever in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael.
Even in galus, without a Bais Hamikdash in which to bring offerings, the essential element of the korbanos — the heartfelt yearning to draw close to Hashem — remains alive and intact within us.
And the Holy One, blessed be He, before Whom present and future are all one…
Since Hashem is beyond time, past, present, and future are equally before Him as a single reality.
…joins together the wills and donations in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael across all the generations.
Hashem gathers and unites the heartfelt longing of every Jew of every era into one, so that our present yearning is bound up with the offerings of the past and the future.
And Hashem's choosing of Bnei Yisrael was not for a single moment.
The Divine selection of Bnei Yisrael was not bound to one point in history but embraces all time at once.
Rather, the will of all the generations arose before Him.
When Hashem chose Bnei Yisrael, He had before Him the collective ratzon of every generation, so His choice rests on the yearning of the whole nation throughout history.
In this way we can have a share in the korbanos that were brought then, and also in those that will be brought in the future Building.
Because all wills are joined before Hashem, our present longing gives us a real portion both in the offerings of the past Bais Hamikdash and in those of the third Bais Hamikdash yet to come.
And in accordance with how much remembrance of the Mikdash is found in the souls of Bnei Yisrael…
The degree to which the longing and memory of the Bais Hamikdash live within our souls determines how much we participate in its reality.
…so too is it awakened in Heaven.
Our inner yearning for the Mikdash arouses a corresponding awakening Above — the earthly desire stirs the heavenly source.
And it is written, "And it shall be for Bnei Yisrael as a remembrance…" (Shemos 30:16).
The Torah itself states that the shekalim serve as a "remembrance," underscoring that the act keeps the bond with Hashem alive in memory and longing.
[And as for the matter of "a ransom for his soul," it may be explained that the korbanos really ought to be brought from the body of the person himself, except that the animal is given as a ransom for the soul, as is written regarding the Akeidah of Yitzchak — see what was written on this in Parshas Vayikra.]
In an aside, the Sefas Emes notes that ideally a person's own self should be offered to Hashem; the animal korban (and the half-shekel "ransom") stands in place of the person, just as the ram took Yitzchak's place at the Akeidah.
And the essence of the korbanos is the drawing near and the deveikus (cleaving) of the world and the times to the supernal root, by means of the order of the daily and additional offerings that Hashem established for us.
The true purpose of the offerings — the word korban means "drawing close" — is to bind the physical world and the cycle of time back to their Divine source, through the fixed schedule of the tamid and mussaf korbanos.
And this is the essential meaning of the "lifting of the head."
This binding of world and time to their root is what it truly means to "raise the head" of Bnei Yisrael — to elevate them and reconnect them to their highest source.
And every Nissan there is a renewed choosing of Bnei Yisrael, through the preparation of the shekalim, as above.
Each year, the preparation of the half-shekel renews Hashem's choice of Bnei Yisrael, refreshing the bond and the elevation that the mitzvah of Shekalim embodies.
Summary: The half-shekel that funded the korbanos embodies the yearning and will for Hashem in every Jewish heart; since past, present, and future are one before Hashem, He unites the longing of all generations, granting us a share in both the offerings of the past Bais Hamikdash and those of the future. Even in galus, our inner desire keeps this bond alive, awakening a parallel response in Heaven and renewing, each Nissan, Hashem's eternal choice of Bnei Yisrael.
