בפסוק והוצאתי אתכם מתחת סבלות מצרים כו'.

"In the verse: ‘And I will take you out from under the burdens of Egypt,’ etc."

The Sefat Emet opens by addressing the introductory phrase and preparing to interpret its deeper meaning.

אמו"ז ז"ל פי' שבנ"י עצמם לא יוכלו לסבול תאות מצרים.

"My master and grandfather, of blessed memory, explained that the Children of Israel themselves could no longer tolerate the lusts of Egypt."

The Rebbe’s grandfather teaches that the inner revulsion of Israel toward Egyptian desires was itself the beginning of liberation.

וזה קצת גאולה.

"And this constitutes a small measure of redemption."

Feeling unable to remain attached to impurity marks the first step of spiritual freedom.

וכן פי' מ"ש וימת מלך מצרים ויאנחו שזה הי' התחלת גאולה מה שהרגישו מרירות הגלות ע"ש ודפח"ח.

"And so he explained the verse: ‘The king of Egypt died, and they groaned,’ that this was the beginning of redemption — that they felt the bitterness of exile."

The recognition of suffering awakens yearning for God and initiates the redemptive process.

ויש עוד לפרש כי בוודאי אם היו בנ"י דבקים בשורשם כראוי.

"And one may further explain: certainly, if the Children of Israel were properly attached to their root…"

A new explanation begins, focusing on Israel’s spiritual essence.

אין אומה ולשון שולטת עליהם.

"No nation or tongue would rule over them."

True spiritual attachment renders Israel beyond worldly domination.

כי דביקות ישראל במקום שאין שם מגע נכרי כלל.

"For Israel cleaves to a place where no foreign force can reach."

Holiness exists beyond the grasp of the nations entirely.

כמאמר חלק ה' עמו.

"As it is said: ‘The portion of the Lord is His people.’"

This verse supports the idea that Israel belongs to an elevated divine domain.

אך כשבנ"י נופלים ח"ו ממדרגתן.

"But when the Children of Israel, God forbid, fall from their level…"

Spiritual descent creates vulnerability.

נק' שהם תחת סבלות מצרים.

"They are then said to be under the burdens of Egypt."

Egypt symbolizes any realm accessible to the nations.

הוא מקום שיש מגע שאר האומות.

"It is a place where the other nations have access."

Distance from holiness exposes Israel to external influence.

והכלל כי חסד השי"ת מגיע על כל הנבראים.

"And the general rule is that the kindness of God extends to all creatures."

Divine kindness is universal in creation.

כמו שכתוב עולם חסד יבנה.

"As it is written: ‘The world is built on kindness.’"

Creation itself is grounded in divine benevolence.

לכן צריכין בנ"י לזכות בדין ובמשפט.

"Therefore the Children of Israel must merit through justice and judgment."

Israel must ascend via the attribute of judgment, not merely kindness.

ובמקום המשפט אין זכות לאומות.

"And in the realm of judgment the nations have no claim."

Judgment distinguishes Israel’s spiritual path from that of the nations.

וזה הי' ישוב על תרעומת (בנ"י) [מרע"ה] למה הרעותה כו'.

"And this was the answer to Moses’ complaint: ‘Why have You done evil…?’"

The suffering was necessary to enable redemption through divine judgment.

והי' התשובה כי צריכין לסבול כדי שיהי' הגאולה במדת הדין כמ"ש לעיל.

"And the reply was that they had to endure suffering so that the redemption would come through the attribute of judgment, as explained above."

Endurance prepares Israel for a higher form of redemption.

אך לא היו יכולין לקבל כמ"ש ולא שמעו כו'.

"But they could not accept this, as it says: ‘And they did not listen…’"

Their pain prevented them from grasping the divine plan.

ושיתף הקב"ה מדה"ר.

"So the Holy One joined the attribute of mercy."

God blended mercy with judgment to make redemption bearable.

ואפשר זה עצמו שותפות אהרן שהוא איש חסד.

"And it is possible that this partnership was embodied by Aaron, who is a man of kindness."

Aaron’s role introduced mercy into the redemption.

ובאמת כפי הנהגת בנ"י למטה.

"And indeed, according to the conduct of the Children of Israel below…"

Human behavior shapes divine response.

כך מתנהגין בשמים עמהם.

"So they are treated in Heaven."

Divine providence mirrors human spiritual state.

וכפי מה שלא היו סובלין כלל זהמת מצרים.

"And to the extent that they could not bear the defilement of Egypt at all…"

Their inner rejection aligned them with a realm beyond Egyptian reach.

כך היו דבקים באותו מקום שאין שם אחיזה למצרים.

"So they were attached to that place where Egypt has no hold."

Spiritual resistance elevated them to protected holiness.

רק שהיו בלתי מתוקנים והי' להם צד לסבול תאות מצרים.

"But they were not fully refined, and there remained in them a side that could still tolerate Egyptian desires."

Their imperfections made them partially susceptible.

כמו שכתוב במדרש הי' קשה להם לפרוש מעבודה זרה.

"As the Midrash states: it was difficult for them to separate from idolatry."

This textual tradition confirms their internal struggle.

לכן היו תחת סבלות מצרים כנ"ל.

"Therefore they were under the burdens of Egypt, as stated above."

Their lack of refinement placed them within Egypt's realm of influence.

וע"ז נאמר והוצאתי אתכם כו'.

"And regarding this it is said: ‘And I will take you out…’"

God’s promise addresses exactly this spiritual condition.

וב' הפירושים א' כנ"ל.

"And both explanations are one, as explained above."

The two approaches ultimately express a single unified teaching.

The Sefat Emet teaches that redemption begins internally, when Israel can no longer tolerate impurity. Domination by Egypt results from spiritual descent, whereas true attachment to God places Israel beyond foreign influence. God desired redemption through judgment, but Israel’s suffering required mercy as well. Ultimately, their inner rejection of Egypt elevated them, even while their imperfections kept them vulnerable.
