Divine Abundance Through Prayer

Further in the name of my grandfather, of blessed memory, on the verse: “My offering, My food for My fires, a pleasing aroma—guard it…”

The Sefat Emet cites his grandfather’s teaching as the basis for understanding how offerings create a “pleasing aroma” that connects Israel to divine abundance.

He explained that the Holy One gives sustenance to all creation, as in the saying: “He renews in His goodness every day the work of creation.”

The continual flow of divine vitality is universal, sustaining the entire world at every moment.

But through the service of the Children of Israel, additional divine influence is drawn.

Israel’s spiritual actions amplify the basic divine flow, increasing holiness in the world.

And this added influence is greater than the original.

The enhancement achieved through human service surpasses the baseline divine sustenance.

And the Holy One asks Israel to ensure that this influence comes through a “pleasing aroma.”

God desires that the additional flow be drawn through spiritual elevation rather than mere natural processes.

And not through nature.

The divine flow must be received consciously, not taken for granted as natural routine.

And this is the meaning of “My food for My fires”—the sustenance I give to creation: guard that it be through a pleasing aroma, as above.

Israel must elevate the divine abundance so that it becomes an offering of intentional relationship.

“He shall kiss with his lips.”

This hints that prayer is an intimate expression that draws divine influence through speech, like a kiss.

And for this reason the daily prayers were instituted in place of the daily offerings, for Israel draws the divine flow each day through blessings and thanksgivings that testify that everything is from God, Who renews daily the work of creation.

Daily prayer serves as the vehicle through which Israel consciously draws divine vitality, acknowledging its source and elevating it.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that while God provides ongoing sustenance to creation, Israel’s service adds a greater, elevated form of divine influence. This flow must be drawn through conscious spiritual intention—“a pleasing aroma”—rather than through nature alone. Daily prayer replaces the offerings as the means for Israel to draw and elevate this divine abundance.
