Torah as Strengthening Refuge
ובמדרש ה' עוזי ומעוזי כו'.
“And in the Midrash: ‘Hashem is my strength and my stronghold…’”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash on the verse describing God as both strength and stronghold.
פי' לבד כי הש"י עוז לבנ"י כמ"ש עזי וזמרת יה.
“The explanation is that the Holy One, blessed be He, is simply the strength of Israel, as it is said: ‘God is my strength and song.’”
He explains that at the most basic level, God Himself is the source of Israel’s strength, as stated in Scripture.
אך גם זאת אשר הם מתחזקים ומתאזרין בו ית'. הם ג"כ בעזר עליון.
“But also this: when they strengthen themselves and gird themselves in Him, blessed be He, this too is through a supernal help.”
Even human effort to attach to God is itself aided from above; the initiative is also divinely supported.
וז"ש עוזי ומעוזי כלומר מה שאני מחזיק במעוזך גם זה מאתך.
“And this is what is meant by ‘my strength and my stronghold’: that even what I hold onto as Your stronghold is also from You.”
The phrase means that both God’s strength given to Israel, and Israel’s capacity to cling to God, originate from God.
ולכן הש"י נתן לבנ"י התורה שנק' עוז.
“Therefore the Holy One gave Israel the Torah, which is called ‘strength.’”
The Torah is itself a channel of divine strength granted to Israel.
שע"י דרך התורה ומצות יכול אדם להתדבק בכח עליון.
“For through the path of Torah and commandments a person can cleave to the supernal power.”
The mitzvot create a practical means for humans to bond with divine energy.
לכן נק' התורה עוז.
“Therefore the Torah is called strength.”
This title reflects its function as a conduit for divine attachment.
והנה באמת בנ"י מצד עצמם מוכנים להתדבק בבחי' עזי וזמרת יה שהוא דביקות עליון ממש בלי עצות תורה ומצות והוא בחי' האבות כנ"ל.
“And indeed, Israel by themselves are prepared to cleave at the level of ‘God is my strength and song,’ which is true supernal attachment, without the strategies of Torah and mitzvot—this is the aspect of the Patriarchs.”
In their essence, Israel possesses an innate capacity for direct cleaving to God, similar to the spiritual level of the Patriarchs.
ה' עוזי.
“‘Hashem is my strength.’”
This expresses the innate, direct bond between Israel and God.
אמנם הש"י רצה לזכות כל העולם באמצעיות בנ"י.
“However, the Holy One desired to bring merit to the entire world through the agency of Israel.”
God’s plan extends beyond Israel, intending universal spiritual elevation through them.
ולכן הי' סיבה שיהיו בעוה"ז ושיתדבקו במעוזם ע"י התורה ומצות כנ"ל.
“Therefore there was a reason that they should be in this world and cleave to their stronghold through Torah and commandments, as above.”
Israel was placed into the physical world so that attachment to God would occur specifically through Torah and mitzvot.
כדי שעי"ז יתקרבו גם הרשעים י).
“So that through this even the wicked would draw near.”
The observance of mitzvot creates a channel that can elevate even those far away.
וז"ש ומעוזי כו' אליך גוים יבאו.
“And this is what is meant by ‘and my stronghold… nations shall come to You.’”
The Torah‑mediated connection to God becomes a light that draws the nations closer.
וכ"כ שמן תורק שמך ע"כ עלמות כו'.
“And similarly it is written: ‘Your name is poured‑forth oil; therefore maidens…’”
The imagery of fragrant oil expresses how divine influence spreads outward.
פי' שע"י כח תורה ומצות שמביאין הארה גם במעשים גשמיים.
“This means that through the power of Torah and commandments, which bring illumination even into physical actions…”
The mitzvot elevate the material world, infusing it with divine light.
עי"ז מריחים אנשי אמת שבאומות ג"כ כח הקדושה ומתגיירין.
“Through this, people of truth among the nations also sense the power of holiness and convert.”
The sanctity revealed through Israel’s mitzvot attracts sincere seekers from the nations to join themselves to God.
The Sefat Emet teaches that both Israel’s innate attachment to God and their effort to cling to Him come from divine strength. The Torah serves as the channel through which this strength enters the world, enabling Israel not only to bond with God but also to draw all humanity toward holiness.
