Remembering to Sanctify Shabbos
“Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it.”
The Sefat Emet teaches that the act of remembering the Sabbath is itself what adds sanctity to it.
For through remembrance additional holiness is added to the Sabbath.
Human awareness and intention draw down extra sanctity that would not descend on its own.
For the root of the Sabbath is exceedingly lofty.
The essential spiritual source of Shabbat is far above this world.
But according to how the Children of Israel remember and guard themselves all week from impurity and wrongdoing, so that they are prepared to receive the Sabbath in purity—
One’s weekday conduct determines one’s capacity to receive Shabbat’s holiness.
Through this they are able to draw the root of holiness into the Sabbath day in this world itself.
The lofty spiritual root of Shabbat becomes tangible when people prepare properly.
And it is taught: “Honor it with clean garments.”
External preparation expresses internal readiness for Shabbat.
For the root of the additional soul that every Jew receives on Shabbat requires a holy and pure body, which is the garment and clothing for the spirit of the soul within him.
The “extra soul” requires a vessel—one’s body—to be refined enough to hold it.
And truly this depends on the weekdays, as it is said: “Six days you shall labor and do all your work that is upon you.”
Proper weekday effort and responsibility create the conditions for receiving Shabbat.
And then, “But the seventh day…”
Only after weekday work is set in order does the sanctity of the seventh day shine forth.
Nevertheless, when Shabbat arrives and a person yearns to receive it in purity—
Sincere longing at the moment Shabbat begins has transformative power.
Then in a single moment it is as though all your work has been completed, as Rashi explains.
Even unfinished tasks fall away; Shabbat itself completes what one could not finish.
Summary: The holiness of Shabbat is lofty, but it becomes manifest in this world through remembrance, preparation, and purity throughout the week. The body must be readied as a vessel for the “additional soul,” and though weekday effort is necessary, true Shabbat readiness is granted in an instant to one who yearns for it.
