Yisro Repairing Amalek's Damage
במדרש רעך ורע אביך א"ת כו' ע"ש.
In the Midrash: “Your friend and the friend of your father do not abandon,” etc.
The Sefat Emet opens with the Midrash discussing the idea of not abandoning the spiritual companions and supports inherited from earlier generations.
לץ תכה ופתי יערים כו'.
“Strike the scoffer, and the simple one will become wise,” etc.
This introduces the theme that a corrupting force must sometimes be struck down so that goodness can be strengthened.
כי בוודאי כל סמיכות ענין יצ"מ ועמלק ויתרו א' הוא.
For certainly the connection between the Exodus, Amalek, and Jethro is one unified matter.
The Sefat Emet teaches that these three narratives form a single spiritual process.
דכ' על יתרו עשית חסד עם כל בנ"י.
For it is written regarding Jethro: “You have done kindness with all Israel.”
Jethro’s arrival and recognition of God served as a kindness to Israel as a whole.
והענין הוא דכ' ברפידים שרפו ידיהם.
And the matter is that it is written that at Rephidim their hands weakened.
Israel’s spiritual slackening created vulnerability that required outside assistance.
כי לא יוכל האדם להיות מוכן למלחמה תמיד.
For a person cannot be perpetually prepared for battle.
Human beings naturally experience fluctuations and cannot sustain constant spiritual intensity.
ורצון הבורא ית' הי' להיות כל האומות בטלים לבנ"י.
And the Creator’s will was that all nations be nullified before Israel.
The ideal state is one in which the world recognizes Israel’s spiritual mission.
והי' תיקון גמור בקבלת התורה.
And there would have been complete repair at the giving of the Torah.
Matan Torah offered the possibility of universal transformation.
לכן ביצ"מ וקי"ס כ' שמעו עמים ירגזון והי' גם עמלק בכלל.
Thus at the Exodus and the splitting of the sea it says, “Nations heard and trembled,” and Amalek too was included.
Even Amalek initially experienced awe and could have submitted.
אך ברשעתו בא להלחם.
But in his wickedness he came to wage war.
Amalek rejected the awe and chose opposition.
אף כי ידע כי עוקר עצמו מן השורש מסר נפשו לרעה.
Even though he knew he was uprooting himself from the root, he gave his soul over to evil.
Amalek knowingly severed himself from the source of life.
לכן יש לנטור לו איבה לעולם.
Therefore one must retain eternal enmity toward him.
Because his opposition is essential, not circumstantial.
ומה שקילקל עמלק בא יתרו ותיקן.
And what Amalek damaged, Jethro came and repaired.
Jethro’s submission counteracted Amalek’s rebellion.
ע"י שהכניע עצמו חזרו האומות להתבטל לבנ"י.
By humbling himself, the nations again became inclined toward nullification before Israel.
Jethro restored the world’s receptivity to holiness.
ובוודאי אם לא הי' שום חלישות כח לבנ"י לא היו צריכין לסיוע זאת.
And certainly, had Israel not experienced weakness, they would not have needed this assistance.
The need for Jethro arose only from Israel’s momentary decline.
אבל על ידי שרפו ידיהם היו צריכין להיות להם סיוע ע"י שכנים.
But because their hands weakened, they needed help from neighbors.
External support compensates for internal weakness.
וזה נוהג בכל איש ישראל שע"י שירים של ימי אהבה יכולין להחיות עצמו גם בימי השנאה.
And this applies to every Jew: through remnants of the days of love, one can revive himself even in the days of hatred.
Past spiritual strength sustains a person during times of spiritual darkness.
וזה ענין יתרו.
And this is the matter of Jethro.
Jethro embodies the supportive force that remains even after decline.
כי מרוב עבודת בנ"י נמשך הריח גם לאומות שא"י לקבל גוף הקדושה רק ריח טוב.
For from the great service of Israel a fragrance extended even to the nations, who cannot receive the substance of holiness, only its scent.
The nations absorb only a superficial but meaningful trace of holiness.
ובמתן תורה ... נכנס בכל הברואים רוח טהרה.
And at the giving of the Torah … a spirit of purity entered all creatures.
Matan Torah spiritually elevated the entire cosmos.
אבל הגוף מקבל ג"כ ריח קדושה וטהרה.
But the body too receives a scent of holiness and purity.
Even the physical self absorbs traces of sacred influence.
ושיריים הללו של הגוף נשארין להתחזק גם בימי נפילה וירידה.
And these remnants in the body remain to strengthen a person even in days of falling and descent.
Residual holiness sustains one during spiritual downturns.
וז"ש רעך כו' אל תעזוב ואז א"צ לשום סיוע.
And this is “Your friend … do not abandon,” and then no assistance is needed.
Remaining connected to inherited spiritual supports prevents collapse.
וזאת הי' מדרגת אבות עולם.
And this was the level of the holy Patriarchs.
They never required external support.
ואם עזבת צריכין להשמר תמיד.
But if you abandon it, you must always guard yourself.
Loss of inner support requires constant vigilance.
וצריכין לקבל עצות משכן קרוב כו'.
And one must receive counsel from a nearby neighbor, etc.
External guidance becomes necessary when internal strength wanes.
וכמו כן אברי הגוף שכנים להנפש.
And likewise the limbs of the body are neighbors to the soul.
The body can assist the soul through its residual holiness.
וע"י שבנ"י מתחילה קבלו עליהם על מלכותו ית' ... הי' להם עצות מרחוק.
And because Israel initially accepted God’s kingship beyond the letter of the law … they had counsel from afar.
Their early devotion created lasting spiritual reserves that later offered guidance even after decline.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel, Amalek, and Jethro form a single spiritual process: weakness creates vulnerability, Amalek exploits it, and Jethro repairs it by submitting to holiness. Residual holiness—“fragrance”—supports both nations and individuals during times of decline.
