Oral Torah Implanted Within Us
Rashi explains that they would respond “yes” to “yes,” and so forth.
This refers to the responsive affirmation of the people at Sinai, expressing full acceptance of the divine words.
This pertains to the Oral Torah, about which we say “eternal life He planted within us,” and it is the testimony that the Torah is uniquely bound to Israel, who were drawn immediately after the Ten Commandments.
The Sefat Emet interprets the people’s response as the beginning of the Oral Torah, the inner life-force of Torah that was implanted specifically within Israel.
It is like the saying: no drop descends from heaven unless two drops rise to meet it.
This image describes a reciprocal relationship: divine revelation draws forth human response; the Oral Torah is our upward movement toward the divine speech.
On this the Sages interpreted the verse: “The Lord is my strength and my stronghold.”
The verse is understood as referring to two dimensions of Torah: the divine revelation and the human power to interpret it.
For the Torah is called “strength.”
This is the revealed Torah, the divine word itself.
And “my stronghold” refers to the power of the Oral Torah.
The Oral Torah is the fortified inner strength given to Israel to elaborate and apply the divine teaching.
Although the sages generate teachings through their wisdom,
Even the human intellect employed in Torah study is part of the divine gift.
it is only the power of the Holy One, blessed be He, that He planted within us.
The Sefat Emet concludes that all human Torah insight ultimately stems from the divine “eternal life” implanted within Israel.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Israel’s affirmative response at Sinai marks the beginning of the Oral Torah, the divine power implanted within the people. Torah consists of divine revelation (“strength”) and Israel’s interpretive capacity (“stronghold”), yet even the sages’ wisdom is fundamentally a manifestation of God’s implanted life-force.
