Doing Before Hearing
In the Midrash: “The Lord is my strength and my stronghold…”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrashic phrase that frames divine power in two modes: essential strength and derived fortification.
For in truth, the root of the souls of Israel is bound to the root of the Torah.
The deepest identity of Israel is ontologically attached to Torah, sharing a single spiritual source.
As it is taught: “Torah and Israel are entirely one,” and this is the meaning of “the Lord is my strength” literally.
The unity of Israel with Torah is itself the “strength” granted directly from God, without intermediaries.
And the aspect of “my stronghold” refers to the fortitude a person receives from God through means and strategies.
This is a lower form of divine strength that comes clothed in worldly processes.
And it is a lesser level than the former.
The mediated strength cannot compare to the direct divine attachment.
Like the difference between the comprehension of the future and the toil of this world, which is through partitions and separations.
Worldly effort is obstructed by limitations, unlike the seamless revelation of the future.
And this too is the matter of placing “we will do” before “we will hear.”
Action represents the higher, angelic level of pure mission.
For “we will do” is the primary level, like ministering angels, whose mission is their very life-force.
Their obedience flows naturally, without need for preparation.
And it does not require preparation.
The first level is innate and immediate.
But the level of “we will hear” was needed by Israel while still in this world, to which their souls were sent.
The hearing corresponds to human existence within physical constraints.
And they were clothed in bodies in order to sustain all creatures.
Embodiment enables Israel to uplift the world.
And this is the meaning of “my stronghold and my refuge… unto You nations will come.”
The mediated strength enables Israel to influence the nations.
For all their descent to Egypt and to all such places.
Exile served a refining purpose.
All was so that the nations would ultimately come to You.
Israel’s journey radiates sanctity outward.
And these two aspects correspond to the weekdays and Shabbat.
Weekdays reflect mediated strength; Shabbat reflects direct divine connection.
For “my stronghold” applies during the week, but on Shabbat it is “my strength” literally.
The shift of divine relationship mirrors sacred time.
As it is written: “Six days you shall labor… and the seventh day is for the Lord.”
Creative work belongs to the weekdays; divine rest to Shabbat.
