Divine Majesty and Human Humility

Pesach · תרל"א (1870) · Essay 19

Humility · Divine Greatness · Pride · Spiritual Growth

“For He has triumphed triumphantly.”

This teaches that God’s exaltedness is absolute, not comparative; it is intrinsic divine greatness.

For all greatness possessed by created beings exists only for His glory.

Any stature or elevation humans experience is merely a reflection meant to honor God, not an independent greatness.

“A wicked person—before his downfall, pride.”

The wicked use their sense of greatness as arrogant self‑inflation, which leads to collapse.

But the righteous experience greatness only so that they may humble themselves by recognizing more deeply His kindnesses.

The tzaddik interprets elevated moments as reminders of divine grace, prompting greater humility.

But the exaltedness of the Holy One is inherent exaltedness itself, for “He has triumphed triumphantly.”

God’s greatness is not relative or functional; it is essential and absolute.

And this is what the Song says: “The enemy said: I will pursue.”

The enemy’s boast appears puzzling in a song of praise, yet it serves a purpose.

And what need is there for this line in the Song?

The question challenges why the Torah includes the enemy’s arrogance in a hymn of salvation.

It appears that even this helped, for his excessive arrogance and boastful mouth caused You to blow with Your wind, etc.

The enemy’s arrogance itself invited divine judgment; his inflated pride created the opening through which God’s saving power manifested.

The Sefat Emet teaches that human greatness is only for God’s honor: the wicked misuse it as arrogance, while the righteous turn it into humility. God’s greatness, however, is intrinsic. Even the enemy’s pride at the Sea served the divine plan, provoking the very downfall that revealed God’s supreme power.
