“A hint regarding the hiding of the afikoman.”

The Sefat Emet begins by framing the practice of hiding the afikoman as an allusion to a deeper spiritual process embedded within the Seder.

“For the miracle of the Exodus was a preparation for all future redemptions, and therefore the full Hallel is not recited on the days of Passover.”

Here he explains that the Exodus was only the beginning of a long unfolding of redemption. Because it set the stage but did not complete the process, the Hallel of Passover remains intentionally incomplete.

“For the redemption of the Exodus has not yet been completed.”

The Sefat Emet underscores that the Exodus remains an ongoing, unfinished redemption – its spiritual light continues to unfold through history.

“Rather, in every generation it becomes completed further, until the future to come.”

Each generation contributes another step toward the fullness of redemption, which will only be realized in the future.

“Therefore a portion of the matzah is hidden for after the meal.”

The hiding of the afikoman symbolizes the concealed and still‑incomplete redemption that will be revealed only at the end.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that hiding the afikoman reflects the unfinished nature of the Exodus. Each generation advances redemption, and the afikoman’s concealment hints at the future revelation of its completion.
