Spiritual Victory Over Nations
Divine Protection · Israel's Enemies · Amalek · Spiritual Awareness
“Then they were confounded, etc.”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting the sudden fear that overtook the nations at the time of Israel’s redemption.
“And from where did the Children of Israel know this at the moment of the Song?”
He asks how Israel could perceive the inner state of the nations while singing at the sea.
“Without doubt, they sensed within their souls the removal of the nations’ power.”
Israel experienced an inner spiritual shift indicating that the dominion of the nations had fallen away.
As it is written: “He established the boundaries of the nations in relation to the number of the Children of Israel.”
This verse teaches that the spiritual structure of the nations is tied to Israel, and their power wanes when Israel ascends.
“For all the nations oppose the service of the Children of Israel.”
The nations’ spiritual resistance is inherent and directed against Israel’s divine mission.
“Therefore, those devoted to divine service feel everything within themselves.”
The spiritually attuned can sense global spiritual movements internally.
“And in truth, the desire of Israel in that Song was to draw all creatures toward Him, blessed be He.”
Their intention in singing was universal elevation—all beings turned toward God.
“And so it would have been, were it not for the wickedness of Amalek, may his name be erased, who came and confused us.”
Amalek’s attack disrupted this universal spiritual ascent.
“And since it is written: ‘The chiefs of Edom were confounded,’ Amalek is included among the chiefs of Edom, as it is written: ‘Chief Amalek,’ etc.”
Amalek is spiritually rooted in Edom and thus shared in that moment of fear.
“But although he was momentarily afraid, he returned and devoted himself to evil, as it is written: ‘He did not fear God.’”
Amalek’s temporary fear did not lead to change; he recommitted himself to opposition to God.
“Even though he knew that God was with the Children of Israel.”
His opposition was willful and knowing, not born of ignorance.
Summary: Israel sensed the collapse of the nations’ spiritual power during the Song at the Sea. Their intention was to elevate all creation, but Amalek—though momentarily shaken—resisted and attempted to disrupt Israel’s divine mission.
