Refining Spiritual Sparks

ענין העומר והספירה.

The matter of the Omer and the counting.

The Sefat Emet introduces the theme: the spiritual meaning of the Omer offering and the Counting of the Omer.

דאחר יצ"מ כ' ויבוא עמלק.

For after the Exodus it is written: “And Amalek came.”

He notes that Amalek’s attack followed immediately after the redemption, signaling spiritual vulnerability after a great ascent.

דכתיב וגם ערב רב עלה אתם.

As it is written: “And also the mixed multitude went up with them.”

The presence of the mixed multitude created spiritual complexity within Israel.

וכידוע שהוציאו בנ"י כל הנצוצות שהיו במצרים.

And it is known that the Children of Israel extracted all the holy sparks that were in Egypt.

The Exodus completed the spiritual work of elevating the hidden sparks embedded in Egypt.

לכן הוצרכו אח"כ שמירה כמ"ש וה' הולך כו'.

Therefore they needed protection afterward, as it is written: “And the Lord went [before them].”

After gathering the sparks, Israel required divine guarding because new spiritual light can attract opposing forces.

ועמלק הרגיש כמ"ש אשר קרך כו' בצאתכם ממצרים שע"י שהיו בהם נצוצות ממצרים יכול לגשת למלחמה עמהם.

And Amalek sensed, as it is said: “Who met you on the way” when you came out of Egypt, that since they carried sparks from Egypt, he was able to approach and wage war with them.

Amalek perceived the residual impurities mixed with the sparks and exploited this vulnerability.

לכן כתיב הנחשלים אחריך.

Therefore it is written: “Those who were straggling behind you.”

The spiritually weak—those still entangled with leftover impurity—were the first targets.

הערב רב ונ"ק שנמשכו עם בנ"י כנ"ל.

The mixed multitude and the other spiritually attached elements that were drawn along with Israel, as mentioned.

These groups increased the spiritual risks after the Exodus.

ומעין זה בכל שנה שיש גאולה בניסן נתוסף נצוצות קדושות לבנ"י שצריכין תיקון.

And similarly every year, when there is redemption in Nisan, additional holy sparks are added to Israel that require rectification.

Each Passover brings new spiritual potential that must be refined.

וע"י העומר שהוא ביטול אל השורש ע"י תנופת העומר מתגרשין כחות הסט"א.

And through the Omer, which represents nullification to the root, through the waving of the Omer the forces of impurity are driven away.

The Omer offering realigns the soul with its divine source, pushing out negative forces.

כדאיתא בזוה"ק אמור בדיקה דאשת חיל סמא דמותא לסט"א.

As stated in the Zohar (Emor): the inspection of the Woman of Valor is deadly poison to the side of impurity.

The Omer’s spiritual act weakens the sitra achra, similar to the purifying symbolism described in the Zohar.

וכן גם עתה ע"י מצות הספירה שבנ"י חפצים לברר המדות לשמים באים לטהרה כנ"ל.

And so now as well: through the mitzvah of counting, by which Israel seeks to refine their qualities for Heaven, they attain purity.

The Counting of the Omer functions as a daily internal refinement toward holiness.

Summary: After the Exodus, Israel carried elevated sparks but also vulnerability, attracting Amalek. Each year’s Nisan redemption repeats this dynamic. The Omer offering and the counting refine and purify these sparks, driving away impurity and sanctifying Israel’s inner traits.
