Separating the grain from the chaff

"We announce concerning the shekalim and concerning the kilayim (forbidden mixtures)" (Shekalim 1:1).
The Mishnah states that on the first of Adar a public announcement is made about the half-shekel donations and about the prohibition of kilayim; the Sefas Emes will explore why these two are joined.
For behold, Rosh Hashanah is in Tishrei.
The new year for the world at large falls in Tishrei.
But for Bnei Yisrael, Nissan is the first of months.
Bnei Yisrael have a distinct beginning point in Nissan, the month of redemption.
And it is written, "Today you are going out, in the month of springtime (Aviv)" (Shemos 13:4).
The Exodus occurred specifically in the spring, the season of the ripening grain.
For everything Hashem arranged in the world is meant for us to learn wisdom from it, just as He arranged in nature that the rainy season is a preparation for the grain.
The natural cycle is a teacher: the winter rains are not an end in themselves but a preparation for the eventual harvest.
For it must pass through plowing, sowing, the growth of grass and straw, until afterward it is clarified to "bring forth bread from the earth."
Producing bread requires a long process of refinement, from plowing and sowing through stalk and straw, until the edible grain is separated out.
So too, Tishrei is the Rosh Hashanah for the general whole.
Tishrei is the new year in a general, all-encompassing sense, like the early stage of the agricultural cycle.
But in Nissan, specially for Bnei Yisrael, is "the first of His grain (reishis tevuasoh)" (Yirmiyahu 2:3).
Nissan corresponds to the point where the "first grain" — Bnei Yisrael, called the first of Hashem's produce — becomes distinct and ready.
And the clarification (birur) takes place in Adar, for then begins the emergence of the wheat.
Adar is the month of separating out the good — the stage when the wheat begins to reveal itself.
For beforehand it was mixed together in the root, inside the straw; therefore the main war against Amalek and Haman is in Adar.
The grain (the holy) had been intermingled with the straw (the chaff, representing the forces of impurity); Adar is when this mixture is separated — which is why the battles against Amalek and Haman fall in Adar.
And it is written, "the house of Yaakov shall be a fire" (Ovadiah 1:18) — this is the aspect of the shekalim, "a coin of fire."
The half-shekel is associated with fire (Hashem showed Moshe a coin of fire); the "house of Yaakov as fire" corresponds to this aspect of the shekalim.
"And the house of Yosef a flame" (Ovadiah 1:18) — this is "Zachor" (the remembrance of blotting out Amalek).
The "house of Yosef as a flame" corresponds to the mitzvah of Zachor, remembering to wipe out Amalek.
And through the power of these two, "the house of Eisav becomes straw" (Ovadiah 1:18), and the grain is clarified and separated from the straw.
The fire of the shekalim and the flame of Zachor together consume "Eisav" — the chaff — separating the holy grain from the worthless straw.
Therefore, although the main blotting out of Amalek is through "Zachor."
The primary mitzvah of destroying Amalek belongs to Parshas Zachor.
Nevertheless, even regarding the shekalim they hinted at kilayim, which is a fine separation (havdalah dakah).
Even the shekalim involve a subtle form of separation — like kilayim, where forbidden mixtures must be kept apart — a more delicate distinction than the open war of Zachor.
For it is written, "Save me, please, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Eisav" (Bereishis 32:12).
Yaakov's prayer names Eisav twice — as "my brother" and as "Eisav" — pointing to two distinct kinds of danger.
It is explained that one must separate from that wicked one in both his "good" and his "evil."
One must distance oneself from Eisav not only when he appears as an open enemy ("evil") but even when he appears benign ("good"), as a friendly brother.
And the shekalim are the matter of "from the hand of my brother."
The shekalim correspond to the subtle danger of "my brother" — the hidden, friendly-seeming threat that requires fine discernment.
For the donation, before it comes to actual deed, requires guarding from a mixture of unfit elements (pesoles).
Even a holy contribution must be guarded, before it is carried out, against being contaminated by impure motives mixed in.
For the yetzer hara mixes into every mitzvah ulterior motives (peniyos) and desires that are not for the sake of Heaven.
The yetzer hara subtly injects self-interested motives into even our holiest acts; guarding against this is the "fine separation" of the shekalim.
And "Zachor" is the aspect of "from the hand of Eisav" — when he becomes an open enemy, to wage war and to turn a person away from the knowledge of his Creator.
Zachor confronts the open enemy: the overt evil that openly attacks and tries to sever a person from Hashem.
And Bnei Yisrael, who are called "the first of His grain," must pass through all these paths until they merit to separate the edible from all the unfit matter.
Bnei Yisrael, the "first grain," must undergo the whole refining process — both fine and overt separation — to extract the pure from the dross.
Therefore from Tishrei until Nissan the essential grain is not yet recognizable, but now it is written, "the winter has passed, the rain is over and gone..." (Shir HaShirim 2:11), and then the grain emerges from the straw.
The long stretch from autumn to spring is the hidden preparatory phase; only as winter ends does the grain finally emerge clear of the straw.
Therefore, "Today you are going out..." (Shemos 13:4).
The Exodus in spring is precisely this moment when the grain — Bnei Yisrael — finally emerges, refined, from the enclosing straw.
And this is the aspect of Yetzias Mitzrayim — to bring out the fruit from within the kelipah (husk).
The Exodus is essentially a process of extracting the holy "fruit" from within the confining husk of impurity.
And so too was the order of Creation: "darkness, and afterward light" (based on Shabbos 77b).
The very pattern of Creation is that darkness precedes light; the obscuring stage always comes before revelation.
"Tohu and vohu (chaos and void)," and afterward "Let there be light" (Bereishis 1:2-3).
Just as Creation began with formless chaos before the light emerged, so all spiritual refinement moves from concealment and mixture to clarity and revelation.
Summary: The Sefas Emes reads the agricultural cycle as a model of spiritual refinement: the grain (Bnei Yisrael, "the first of Hashem's produce") lies mixed within the straw and only becomes distinct as winter ends, emerging clear in the spring of Nissan — the Exodus, which extracts the fruit from the husk. Adar is the month of this separation, hence the wars against Amalek and Haman. He maps two modes of separation onto the Adar readings: Zachor confronts the open enemy ("from the hand of Eisav"), while the shekalim demand a subtler "fine separation" ("from the hand of my brother") — guarding even our mitzvos from the ulterior motives the yetzer hara mixes in. All of this follows the order of Creation itself: darkness before light, chaos before "Let there be light."
