Israel Rejecting Egyptian Defilement

בפסוק והוצאתי אתכם מתחת סבלות מצרים.

“In the verse: ‘And I will bring you out from under the burdens of Egypt.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by focusing on the divine promise to lift Israel out from under Egypt’s oppressive burdens.

ואא"ז ז"ל פי' שלא יוכלו לסבול תועבת מצרים כו'.

And my holy grandfather explained that they could no longer bear the abominations of Egypt.

The previous rebbe taught that the ‘burdens’ were not only physical slavery but the spiritual repulsiveness of Egypt, which Israel could no longer tolerate.

וזהו באמת תכלית הגאולה שרצה הקב"ה שיצאו בנ"י מכור הברזל ממצרים ושיעלו כל הנצוצות קדושות הנמצא שם.

And this is truly the purpose of the redemption: that the Holy One wanted Israel to leave the iron furnace of Egypt and to raise all the holy sparks found there.

The goal of the Exodus was spiritual: to extract the sparks of holiness embedded within Egypt’s depths.

והסיגים וסט"א שיש במצרים לא יתדבקו בהם.

And the dross and the side of impurity that existed in Egypt should not cling to them.

Israel’s task was to elevate the holy elements while avoiding attachment to impurity.

כי כן צריך להיות איש ישראל שאין הרע יכול להתדבק בו.

For so it must be with a Jew, that evil cannot cling to him.

The Sefat Emet asserts an ideal state where the inner purity of Israel naturally repels evil.

ובזה מוכנים הם לארץ ישראל דכ' ולא תקיא אתכם הארץ כו'.

And through this they become prepared for the Land of Israel, as it is written: ‘And the land shall not vomit you out.’

Only a people purified from impurity can be sustained by the sanctity of the land.

כי א"י אינה יכולה לסבול כל תועבה כמ"ש רש"י שם.

For the Land of Israel cannot endure any abomination, as Rashi explains there.

The land itself rejects moral corruption, reinforcing the need for inner refinement.

וכמו כן נפש ישראל א"י לסבול.

And likewise the soul of Israel cannot bear it.

The Jewish soul parallels the land—both reject impurity.

ובנ"י הם עצמם המבררים כמ"ש מצרף לכסף כו' ואיש לפי מהללו.

And Israel themselves are the refiners, as it is said: ‘A refiner of silver… each person according to his praise.’

Israel’s spiritual work is active refinement—separating good from evil.

כי בנ"י מבררים אותיות התורה.

For Israel refines the letters of the Torah.

Their deeds and inner work reveal the Torah’s hidden sparks.

והארת התורה הנמצא בכל מקום.

And the illumination of the Torah found in every place.

Every place contains spiritual light waiting to be uncovered.

והפסולת משליכים.

And the waste they cast aside.

The process includes rejecting what is spiritually useless.

כדאיתא בזוה"ק שבנ"י נמשלו ללב שאינו מקבל פסולת וגשמיות רק חלק הנקי ומבורר מפסולת.

As stated in the Zohar, Israel is likened to the heart, which does not receive waste or gross matter—only the clean, refined portion.

Israel’s inner nature is compared to the heart’s biological capacity to extract nourishment and expel waste.

כי באמת יצירת האדם הכל רומז אל הפנימיות.

For in truth, the formation of the human being alludes to the inner dimension.

The human body models spiritual processes.

כמו שאדם אוכל הכל.

Just as a person eats everything.

Human digestion receives a mixture of components.

והפסולת נדחה.

And the waste is expelled.

The body rejects what cannot be assimilated.

וחיות המזון נשאר באדם ונהפך להיות כלול בנפש האדם.

And the vital force of the food remains in the person and becomes absorbed into the soul.

Nourishment becomes part of the individual’s very being.

כן צריך להיות בפנימיות שכל הדברים יסבבו אל האדם והיא מעלה בנפשו ומברר החלק קדושה להתדבק בו.

So must it be inwardly: everything should be directed toward the person, and he elevates within his soul the portion of holiness to cling to it.

Spiritually, one must absorb the holy elements of experience and unite with them.

והפסולת יהי' נדחה.

And the waste shall be rejected.

Negative or impure influences must be expelled.

והכל בכח התורה ובעזר הבורא ית"ש.

And all of this is through the power of Torah and with the help of the Creator, blessed be He.

The entire refining process depends on divine assistance and Torah’s illumination.

כמ"ש וידעתם כי אני ה' המוציא כו' מתחת סבלות מצרים.

As it is written: ‘And you shall know that I am the Lord who brings you out from under the burdens of Egypt.’

True knowledge of God emerges through the experience of liberation.

ואחז"ל אם אין דעת הבדלה מנין.

And our sages said: ‘If there is no knowledge, whence comes separation?’

Discernment—separating good from evil—depends on divine knowledge.

ודו"ק.

And examine this well.

The Sefat Emet urges the reader to contemplate the matter deeply.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the essence of the Exodus was spiritual refinement—the elevation of holy sparks and rejection of impurity. Israel, like the human heart, absorbs only what is pure, casting off waste. This inner work prepares them for the sanctity of the Land and is achieved only through Torah and divine aid.
