The fiftieth gate and the World of Freedom
Sefiras HaOmer · Shavuos · refinement · fiftieth gate · alma d'cheirus
Regarding "And you shall count for yourselves" etc., "you shall count fifty days."
The Sefas Emes begins from the mitzvah of Sefiras HaOmer — counting forty-nine days toward the fiftieth, Shavuos.
For it is taught in the Gemara: "Who can produce a pure thing from an impure?" Rabbi Meir says: the blood becomes turbid and turns into milk.
Chazal ask how something pure can emerge from something impure (Iyov 14:4). One answer: a mother's blood transforms into the pure milk that nurses her child.
And the Sages say: the seed is impure, yet from it is born a pure person.
A second answer: from a lowly physical source a pure human being comes into the world. Both show purity emerging from impurity.
Now these two things happen as one: when the refinement of the drop is completed and a person is born, at that same time the blood becomes turbid and turns into milk.
The two purifications are really a single process — as the child is born refined, the very same transformation turns the mother's blood into nourishing milk.
And so it is in the inner realm: according to the refinement in the souls of Bnei Yisrael, so it is refined for them above, the gevuros (severities) are sweetened for them, and the Torah is made ready for them — and so it was at Yetzias Mitzrayim, when Bnei Yisrael were purified like a fetus in its mother's womb, and afterward the Torah was given to them.
The same pattern works on the spiritual plane: as Bnei Yisrael refine themselves below, harsh judgments are sweetened above and the Torah becomes accessible. The Exodus was a kind of gestation — Bnei Yisrael were purified like an unborn child, and only then were they ready to receive the Torah.
And so it is for every individual: according to his own purification, the portion of Torah that belongs to him is drawn down to him.
Each person has a unique share in Torah, and he receives it in proportion to how much he has refined himself.
Concerning this it is written: "Fortunate is the man whose strength is in You... highways are in their hearts" (Tehillim 84:6).
The posuk speaks of inner "highways" — paths carved within the heart that lead to Hashem and His Torah.
"Adam" refers to none but Yisrael, and according to the highways in their hearts, so is it awakened for them and the gate of Torah is opened for them.
The "man" of the posuk is Yisrael, and the inner paths a person carves in his heart determine how wide the gateway of Torah opens for him.
This is the meaning of "Give strength to Elokim" (Tehillim 68:35).
The posuk hints that the strength a person gives "to Hashem" is itself the Torah.
"Oz" (strength) means nothing but Torah, and this is the meaning: fortunate is one who, by means of the highways, has strength in You.
Reading "oz" as Torah, the posuk teaches that the one who carves inner highways in his heart draws the strength of Torah and finds it "in You" — bound up with Hashem.
This is the meaning of "those who do His word," as the Zohar HaKadosh says in Balak.
"Doers of His word" (Tehillim 103:20) are those who, through their avodah, become fitting vessels for Torah, as the Zohar explains.
And understand this.
The Sefas Emes signals that this idea — that refinement opens the gate of Torah — rewards deeper contemplation.
Now the counting is forty-nine days.
He turns to the structure of the count: forty-nine days, corresponding to forty-nine "gates."
And on Shavuos an illumination descends from the fiftieth gate, which is the World of Freedom.
On the fiftieth day, Shavuos, light shines down from the fiftieth gate — the "World of Freedom" (alma d'cheirus), a level beyond the reach of the impure forces.
And it is brought in the name of the Arizal, on the teaching that "the dough of Bnei Yisrael did not have time to rise" etc., that they were in Mitzrayim within the forty-nine gates of impurity, and had they, Heaven forbid, sunk into the fiftieth gate, they could not have been redeemed — see there.
The Arizal explains that Bnei Yisrael in Egypt had descended through forty-nine gates of tumah; the redemption had to come before they entered the fiftieth gate, from which there is no return. That urgency is why their dough had no time to rise.
Correspondingly, when they entered the gates of holiness, since the fiftieth gate of holiness was opened to them, they could no longer return to be enslaved to the Sitra Achra (the other side); therefore it is the World of Freedom.
The mirror image: once the fiftieth gate of kedushah opens, a person can never again fall under the dominion of the forces of impurity. That is precisely why it is called the World of Freedom.
For within the forty-nine gates, since even in the gates of impurity there is a spark of holiness, one can return and become purified, as it is written, "Who can produce... not One."
The forty-nine lower gates still contain hidden sparks of holiness, so even one fallen there can do teshuvah and be purified — this is the "pure from impure" of the earlier posuk.
And these forty-nine gates must be refined by Bnei Yisrael, as it is written, "And you shall count for yourselves."
The forty-nine days of Sefirah are the avodah of refining the forty-nine gates — each day reclaiming the holy spark within another level.
But the fiftieth gate of holiness has no contact with impurity at all; therefore the Two Loaves (shtei halechem) are chometz, since the Sitra Achra cannot attach itself to the revelation of the fiftieth gate.
At the fiftieth gate impurity simply cannot reach. That is why the Shavuos offering is leavened bread — usually a symbol of the yetzer hara — because at this exalted level even chometz poses no danger; the other side can find no grip there.
And to contrast it, on the side of the Sitra Achra, in its fiftieth gate there is no holy spark at all.
The lowest fiftieth gate of impurity is the perfect inverse: total darkness with no spark of holiness, from which there is no return.
This is what the Zohar HaKadosh says: "and you shall become impure" — written without an alef — see there at the end of Parshas Shmini.
The Zohar notes that "v'nitmasem" (Vayikra 11:43) is spelled defectively, hinting at this deepest impurity that is utterly "without the One," with no holy spark within it.
And on Shavuos the fiftieth gate is revealed; therefore it is written regarding Shavuos, "on this very day" (b'etzem hayom hazeh), and likewise on Yom Kippur, for this is a pure day with no admixture, and it is called "this very day."
"Etzem hayom hazeh" — the "very essence of the day" — marks days that touch the fiftieth gate, which is pure essence with no mixture of impurity. Both Shavuos and Yom Kippur are described this way.
And likewise regarding milah it is written, "on this very day Avraham was circumcised."
The same phrase appears at Avraham's bris (Bereishis 17:26), tying milah to this same level of pure essence.
For it too is on the eighth — in the World of Freedom — as explained above.
Milah on the eighth day reaches the same level "beyond seven," the fiftieth-gate World of Freedom, untouched by impurity — uniting milah, Shavuos and Yom Kippur as moments of pure essence.
Summary: Just as nature produces purity from impurity (milk from blood, a child from a lowly seed), so the souls of Bnei Yisrael refine the forty-nine "gates" during Sefiras HaOmer, sweetening the gevuros above and earning each one his portion of Torah. The forty-nine lower gates still hold a holy spark, allowing teshuvah, but on Shavuos the fiftieth gate — the World of Freedom, pure essence untouched by impurity — is revealed. This is why the Shavuos loaves are chometz, why Shavuos, Yom Kippur, and milah are all called "b'etzem hayom hazeh," and why entering this gate frees a person forever from the grip of the Sitra Achra.
