Faith Through All Generations
Emunah · Song of the Sea · Redemption · Amalek · Divine Revelation
“Then sang…”
The verse begins “Then sang,” though it could have said simply “sang,” teaching that something new began at that moment.
It should have said “sang.”
The Sefat Emet notes the grammatical difficulty to introduce a deeper explanation.
Rather, the meaning is that after the Exodus the mouths of Israel were opened to sing before God, as it is written: “This people I formed… they shall recount My praise.”
Only once freed could Israel express sacred speech and song, fulfilling their purpose as a praising people.
But when they were in exile, holy words could not be revealed in the world; then, at the sea, songs and praises to God began to emerge, as it says “to say”—for all generations.
Exile suppresses spiritual expression; redemption releases it, establishing a pattern for all time.
And it is written, “They believed”; by the merit of faith they sang. As the Midrash says: “Then” denotes faith and trust.
Their song was empowered by their renewed faith.
But this is difficult: after seeing such mighty deeds, what place is there for faith?
One might think that witnessing miracles removes the need for faith.
But certainly this is faith for all generations.
Their faith was not about the present moment, but about the future.
Meaning: when Israel saw God’s great hand, they believed that even in future times of trouble, darkness, or exile, they would not fall from their faith.
The miracle anchored their trust for all future hardships.
And regarding a penitent it is said that the Knower of Secrets testifies that he will not return to sin, even if tempted as at the first transgression.
True transformation is proven when future challenges do not undo one’s resolve.
So too the verse testifies that Israel believed even regarding future exiles.
Their faith extended forward across history.
By the power of that faith we endure in all exiles, even now.
Our survival is sustained by their foundational trust.
Just as the redemption from Egypt included all future redemptions within it.
The first redemption contains the seeds of the last.
So too the cry, the faith, and the song are all openings and gateways for all generations.
Their actions established spiritual pathways for all time.
And truly all the song is only preparation, as it says: “I will sing… I will beautify… I will exalt.”
The song at the sea anticipates a fuller, future song.
For the essence of the song will be completed in the final redemption, when the wicked disappear; and the beginning of this was when the Egyptians drowned.
The ultimate song awaits the world’s complete rectification.
And it might have been completed then, were it not for the wickedness of Amalek which delayed the repair.
Amalek obstructs the revelation of divine unity.
And the Midrash says: “Your throne is established from then.”
This refers to the potential completion at the sea.
For truly the power of the Creator is in the world, but hidden because of the wicked.
Divine presence is veiled by human corruption.
“Darkness will cover the earth.”
The world’s concealment is a result of evil.
As it is said: God swore that His throne is not whole until the seed of Amalek is blotted out.
The divine throne represents complete revelation, which is delayed by Amalek.
Meaning: He does not desire His glory to be revealed while Amalek’s memory exists.
Revelation requires the removal of its obstruction.
And at the splitting of the sea the throne was ready to be whole, and all creation would have been elevated by Israel, who were raising creation to its root of life as at the beginning.
The miracle opened the possibility of complete cosmic elevation.
This is the world’s restoration, called “Your throne was settled.”
Full repair brings stability and divine presence.
And this is called “Then”—the cleaving of creation to a single moment beyond time, from which all time and creation flow.
“Then” refers to transcendence, a timeless root moment.
This moment is called “Then,” which includes all times, and regarding it is said: “Your throne is established from then.”
The verse hints at the timeless source moment in which ultimate redemption is rooted.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the song at the sea inaugurated Israel’s capacity for sacred expression, rooted in enduring faith that sustains all generations. The events of the Exodus opened pathways for redemption, song, and divine revelation, whose completion awaits the final eradication of Amalek and the ultimate redemption.
