Path to True Faith
Emunah · Faith in Sages · Moshe Rabbeinu · Song of the Sea
“And they believed in God and in Moses His servant.”
This verse opens the progression of faith that the Sefat Emet will describe: belief in God linked with belief in His servant, Moses.
It is known, as the holy books teach, that through faith in the sages one can come to faith in the Creator, for His faith is above the faith placed in the sages.
The Sefat Emet notes the traditional teaching that emunat chachamim serves as a stepping-stone to a higher, purer faith in God Himself.
But this is the aspect of “I am first and I am last.”
He explains that the entire process is encompassed by God, who precedes and completes all stages of faith.
For there is an initial faith in God, which leads to faith in the sages, and afterward one arrives at a true faith in the Holy One.
Faith unfolds in stages: first a basic faith in God, then trust in spiritual teachers, and finally a refined, direct faith in God.
And so is the order here: “They believed in God,” then “and in Moses,” and afterward “then Moses and the children of Israel sang,” for through the Song they reached a true faith, as above.
The sequence in the Torah reflects this ascending structure, culminating in the Song at the Sea, where Israel achieved complete faith.
And this is a pattern of general–particular–general, as written in the Ra‘maya on Parashat Va’era.
The process begins broadly, becomes detailed, and then expands again into a higher, more inclusive state of faith.
Summary: The Sefat Emet outlines a threefold ascent of faith—starting with basic belief in God, passing through faith in the sages, and culminating in a complete, elevated faith expressed in the Song at the Sea.
