בפסוק ששת ימים תאכל מצות וביום השביעי עצרת לה'.

“In the verse: Six days you shall eat matzot, and on the seventh day there shall be an assembly to God.”

The Sefat Emet opens by framing the distinction between the six days of eating matzah and the seventh day as a spiritual gathering dedicated to God.

דאיתא במד' סוף פ' בא כי שביעי של פסח הוא במקום יום השבת.

As stated in the Midrash at the end of Parashat Bo: the seventh day of Passover corresponds to Shabbat.

The Midrash teaches that the seventh day functions like Shabbat, a day of rest beyond human effort.

כי כל הימים היו עסוקין במלחמה ורדיפת המצריים.

For during all the earlier days they were engaged in the war and flight from the Egyptians.

The initial days of Passover were filled with struggle, tension, and pursuit.

ועתה באבוד רשעים רנה ובאו למנוחה בקי"ס.

But now, with the destruction of the wicked, there was song, and they entered rest at the splitting of the sea.

The seventh day brought relief, joy, and spiritual rest through the miracle of the Sea.

וכן עשה הקב"ה זכר לנפלאותיו לכל השנים.

Thus God established a remembrance of His wonders for all generations.

Every year, Passover reenacts these foundational miracles.

ששת ימים תאכל מצות הוא לשון מצה ומריבה כמ"ש בזוה"ק פ' פנחס.

“Six days you shall eat matzot” alludes to ‘strife,’ as taught in the Zohar, Parashat Pinchas.

The Sefat Emet interprets matzah as symbolizing struggle and spiritual effort.

ובשביעי של פסח יום המנוחה עצרת לה'.

But the seventh day of Passover—the day of rest—is an assembly for God.

This day represents divine rest beyond human work.

וגם דכתיב במקהלות ברכו ה' לכן ביום השירה יכולין להתאסף בכנופיא לה'.

And as it is written: “In gatherings bless God”; therefore on the day of song they can assemble together for God.

The communal nature of the Song at the Sea empowers collective spiritual elevation.

והנה בהבטחת הקב"ה להאבות הי' רק להוציאנו ממצרים וקי"ס הי' תוספות.

In God’s promise to the Patriarchs, He pledged only to take us out of Egypt; the splitting of the sea was an added gift.

The miracle of the sea exceeded the original divine promise.

וכבר אמרו רז"ל כי תוספתו של הקב"ה מרובה על העיקר.

And the Sages said: God’s additions surpass the primary promise.

Divine generosity expands beyond what was foretold.

והוא בחי' יום השבת. נשמה יתירה שהוא למעלה מהכנת התחתונים.

This corresponds to Shabbat: the extra soul, beyond human preparation.

The extra dimension of Shabbat parallels the undeserved miracle of the sea.

לכן בקי"ס ה' ילחם לכם ואתם תחרישון.

Therefore at the Sea the Lord will fight for you, and you shall be silent.

Salvation came directly from God, requiring no human action.

והי' הגאולה בשורש העליון.

The redemption occurred in the supernal root.

This salvation emanated from a higher spiritual source.

ולכן הי' ישועה לדורות.

Thus it became a salvation for all generations.

A redemption rooted above generates eternal impact.

וכ' ישראל נושע בה' תשועת עולמים.

As it is written: Israel is saved by God with eternal salvation.

True salvation persists when it stems from divine power.

ולכן נקבע השירה לדורות.

Therefore the Song was established for all generations.

The enduring nature of the Song reflects its divine origin.

והשירה הזו היה הכנה לכל המתנות טובות שבישראל עד לעתיד.

This song was a preparation for all future gifts to Israel.

The Song at the Sea became the foundation for Torah and Temple.

ונאמרה ברוה"ק.

And it was recited with the Holy Spirit.

The song expressed divinely inspired awareness.

ועליה נאמר ואשים דברי בפיך.

Of it is said: I shall place My words in your mouth.

The divine speech planted in Israel began with this song.

ובצל ידי כסיתיך העננים.

And in the shadow of My hand I have covered you—the clouds.

The clouds of glory sheltered Israel, linked to the song’s protection.

לנטוע שמים הוא קבלת התורה משמים.

To plant the heavens refers to receiving the Torah from heaven.

The Song prepared Israel for revelation.

וליסוד ארץ הוא כניסת ארץ ישראל ובנין המקדש.

And to establish the earth refers to entering the Land and building the Temple.

These earthly foundations stemmed from the spiritual planting in the Song.

ובשירה קדמוך.

And in the song: “They preceded You.”

Israel recognized God even before formal command.

ועליהם נאמר מי הקדימני ואשלם.

Of them it is said: Who preceded Me that I should repay?

Israel’s spontaneous devotion is uniquely meritorious.

דכתיב וידעתם כי אני ה'.

As it is written: And you shall know that I am the Lord.

The miracles cultivated inner knowledge of God.

וע"ז השתוקקו בנ"י באמרם זה אלי ואנוהו.

Israel yearned for this when they said: This is my God and I will glorify Him.

Their yearning expressed a desire to beautify mitzvot and become vessels for divine presence.

רמ"ח מ"ע ושס"ה ל"ת הם תקונים לאיברי וגידי האדם.

The 248 positive and 365 negative commandments refine the organs and limbs of a person.

Mitzvot prepare the body to host divine light.

וכפי הקדושה שנמצא בלבות בנ"י זוכין לבנות המקדש.

According to the holiness found in Israel’s hearts, they merit building the Temple.

The Temple reflects the inner sanctity of the people.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the seventh day of Passover functions like Shabbat, revealing a divine salvation beyond human effort. The Song at the Sea becomes the root of all future spiritual gifts—Torah, Temple, and the inner capacity to host the divine—because it stems from God’s supernal initiative and Israel’s awakening to “This is my God.”
