Moshe's prophecy as essential, not temporary
Moshe Rabbeinu · nevuah · deveikus · ne'eman · prophets
On the verse: "Not so My servant Moshe; in all My house he is trusted (ne'eman)." (Bamidbar 12:7)
Hashem distinguishes Moshe Rabbeinu from all other prophets, calling him uniquely "trusted" throughout the entire household of Hashem.
And there is a difficulty: the end of the verse does not follow from its beginning, for where was any lack of emunah (faithfulness) among the other prophets mentioned at the start?
If Moshe is praised as "ne'eman," the wording implies a contrast — yet the verse never said the other prophets were lacking in faithfulness. So in what sense is Moshe singled out as "trusted"?
But the matter is this: all the prophets had to undergo a change at the time of prophecy, through hispashtus hagashmiyus (a stripping away of physicality), and they became like a new creation — as it is taught that when prophecy rested upon them their faces shone like torches.
For ordinary prophets, prophecy required a temporary transformation: they had to shed their physical state and be remade, their faces blazing like torches as the nevuah descended upon them.
If so, the prophecy was not bound to them in their very essence.
Because they had to be changed in order to receive it, the nevuah remained something external to their true selves rather than part of their essential being.
But with Moshe Rabbeinu it was the reverse: when he needed to speak with the people, a veil (masveh) was placed over his face, and he had to change by means of a covering.
Moshe's relationship to prophecy was inverted. His natural state was the prophetic state; the "change" he required was in the other direction — to veil himself so he could descend and communicate with ordinary people.
And when prophecy spoke through him, it was in his very essential form, as it is written: "Mouth to mouth I speak with him." (Bamidbar 12:8)
For Moshe, prophecy flowed through his essential self with no alteration — a direct "mouth to mouth" connection, with no need to become a different creation.
And this is what is called "ne'eman" (trusted/faithful).
This is the meaning of his being "trusted": the prophecy was permanently and essentially fixed in him, as reliable and constant as his own being — not a fleeting visitation.
And therefore they did not need to separate from their wives as Moshe Rabbeinu did — as it is taught that in "Moshe, Moshe" there is no pause (pesik), for the Moshe below is the very same as the Moshe above, the "man of Hashem."
Because their prophecy was only temporary, the other prophets did not need to permanently separate from their wives. Moshe, by contrast, lived continuously in the prophetic state — the "Moshe below" was identical to the "Moshe above," with no break between them — and so his separation was permanent.
But the other prophets had deveikus (attachment) to their root above only at the moment of prophecy.
For everyone except Moshe, the bond with their spiritual root was intermittent — present only during the actual experience of nevuah, and absent the rest of the time.
Summary: Moshe Rabbeinu is called "ne'eman" not because the other prophets lacked faithfulness, but because their prophecy required them to be temporarily transformed into a "new creation," remaining external to their essence and active only at the moment of nevuah. Moshe alone lived continuously in the prophetic state — "mouth to mouth," the Moshe below identical to the Moshe above — so prophecy was fixed in his very essence.
