Penimiyus versus the hollow externals of Korach

Korach · תר"מ (1879) · Essay 3

Korach · Penimiyus · Humility · Moshe Rabbeinu · Aharon

My grandfather, of blessed memory, said in the name of the Rebbe of Peshischa, of blessed memory: Observe how those who oppose the tzaddik specifically choose to speak against him in the very trait that is most perfected in him.

The Sefas Emes cites a teaching that opponents of a tzaddik attack him precisely in the area where he is strongest — a telling sign of their baseless hostility.

As they said, "Why do you raise yourselves up?" — while the verse testifies, "And the man Moshe was exceedingly humble," etc.

Korach and his assembly accused Moshe Rabbeinu of arrogance, the very opposite of his defining quality, since the Torah itself attests that he was the humblest of men.

And one may add to his words: because Moshe Rabbeinu's heart was utterly clear in his humility, he therefore had no concern about conducting himself in ways that arrogant people might interpret as self-exaltation; since the very category of haughtiness did not exist within him, the aspect of his humility was not recognizable in the eyes of the masses.

Precisely because Moshe was so perfectly humble within, he felt no need to guard his outward conduct against the suspicion of pride. His inner humility was so complete that arrogance was simply not a possibility for him — yet for that very reason ordinary people could not see his humility on the surface.

The principle is that in everything, the main thing is the penimiyus (inner dimension); and concerning Korach it is said, "but envy is the rot [the numerical value of "rot" equals "Korach"] of the bones," for he was lacking the penimiyus.

What truly counts is the inner reality, not the outer appearance. Korach was hollow within — his name shares the gematria of "rot" — and his envy was the decay of one who had no inner core.

And Moshe Rabbeinu and Aharon were the penimiyus, the daas (inner mind), of Bnei Yisrael; they illuminated all of Bnei Yisrael and were elevated, as it is said, "the light within it restores them to good."

Moshe and Aharon embodied the inner spiritual mind of the nation. Their inner light shone outward, uplifting all of Bnei Yisrael and drawing them back to good.

But Korach and his assembly clung only to the chitzoniyus (the outer dimension), and all their deeds appeared exceedingly good.

Korach's faction attached itself only to externals. Outwardly their actions looked impressive and pious, but they lacked any inner substance.

But Aharon appeared to be a simple man, while in truth he possessed the penimiyus, and concerning this it is said: "planted in the House of Hashem, in the courtyards," etc.

Aharon seemed plain and unassuming on the outside, yet he carried the true inner light. He was like a tree planted and rooted in the House of Hashem, drawing from a hidden inner source.

And this was the sign of the staff — to show that his penimiyus was bound to the root; and examine this closely, for I have been brief in this matter.

Aharon's staff blossoming was the proof: though dry and lifeless on the outside, it brought forth flowers because his inner being was firmly connected to its living source. The outwardly simple man held the true vitality within.

Summary: Korach attacked Moshe Rabbeinu precisely in his strongest trait — humility — because Moshe's inner humility was so complete that it left no trace of pride to guard against, and thus went unrecognized by the masses. The deeper lesson is that the essence of everything is the penimiyus, the inner dimension. Korach clung only to impressive externals while being hollow within, whereas Moshe and Aharon, though outwardly plain, carried the true inner light bound to its root — proven by Aharon's staff that blossomed from a hidden inner source.
