Human deeds become Torah through partnership

Concerning the reading of Megillas Rus on Shavuos: it comes to make known the power of partnership that Bnei Yisrael have in the Torah of Hashem — how out of the deeds of human beings a book and a scroll within the Torah of Hashem is made.

We read Rus on Shavuos to teach that human deeds themselves become Torah. The acts of Rus and Boaz were recorded as a holy scroll, showing that people are partners with Hashem in the making of Torah.

And in the Midrash: had Boaz known that Hashem was writing about him "and he handed her parched grain" (Rus 2:14), he would have given her fattened calves.

The Midrash imagines that Boaz, had he realized his small kindness would be eternally recorded in Tanach, would have done far more — highlighting how every deed is inscribed above.

My grandfather, of blessed memory, explained: if he had known that his deeds reach all the way to Hashem Himself, as it is taught, "all your deeds are written in a book" (Avos 2:1) — thus far his words.

The Chiddushei HaRim explained that the point of the Midrash is the awesome reality that human deeds literally ascend before Hashem and are recorded — as the Mishnah warns, everything we do is written down.

And this too is the meaning — that all their deeds become from them Torah, a rectification, and a teaching for all generations.

The deeds of Rus and Boaz did not merely earn reward; they were transformed into Torah itself, an eternal lesson and tikkun for every generation that learns from them.

And it is written, "You have caused Hashem to declare... and Hashem has caused you to declare" (Devarim 26:17-18), which we explained elsewhere — that Bnei Yisrael accomplished through their deeds that they drew down, as it were, His divinity, to clothe, as it were, His light within the letters of the Torah.

Through their deeds, Bnei Yisrael draw Hashem's own light down so that it becomes "clothed" in the letters of Torah. Human action makes the divine light expressible in words and letters.

And this is "You have caused Hashem to declare," and likewise "Hashem has caused you to declare" — that from every deed of Bnei Yisrael an engraving and an imprint is made in all the worlds, so that from it there comes an utterance and a book.

The reciprocal language of the pasuk teaches mutuality: just as our deeds give Hashem "speech" in the world, His word elevates us. Every act leaves an engraving in all worlds that becomes a divine "saying" and a written book.

And this is the matter of the Torah, which is called "the Book of the Covenant" (Shemos 24:7) and "testimony."

The Torah is the bris — the bond — and the eidus (testimony) of the partnership between Bnei Yisrael and Hashem, formed in part through their very deeds.

And it is brought in the Midrash: as it were, Hashem held two handbreadths of the luchos, and Moshe Rabbeinu held two handbreadths.

The Midrash pictures Hashem and Moshe each grasping the tablets, with a space between — symbolizing that Torah is a joint holding, a covenant grasped from both sides.

The explanation: that the Torah is the covenant, by which Bnei Yisrael have a genuine bond with Him, blessed is He, through the Torah.

The shared grasp of the luchos expresses the bris: through Torah, Bnei Yisrael are literally bound to Hashem, partners in the same holy bond.

And this is the hint of the waving of the two loaves [on Shavuos]: "Come, partake of My bread" (Mishlei 9:5) — the Written Torah and the Oral Torah, as above.

The two loaves offered on Shavuos symbolize the two Torahs, Written and Oral. Just as the loaves are two yet one offering, the Oral Torah — built from human input — joins the Written Torah as one shared covenant, the "bread" Hashem invites us to partake of together with Him.

Summary: Megillas Rus, read on Shavuos, reveals the power of partnership Bnei Yisrael have in the Torah: their very deeds — like the kindnesses of Rus and Boaz — are inscribed in all the worlds and become Torah, "a teaching for all generations." Through human action the divine light is clothed in the letters of Torah, which is the Book of the Covenant binding Yisrael to Hashem — symbolized by Hashem and Moshe jointly grasping the luchos, and by the two Shavuos loaves of Written and Oral Torah.
