Healing the Serpent Within

Chanukah · תרנ"ד (1893) · Essay 4

Humility · Klipah · Modim · Holiness · Spiritual Correction

“And my master and teacher, of blessed memory, said that therefore they instituted in the prayer of thanksgiving what is written regarding the serpent’s thigh, which does not allow a person to bow properly before the Holy One, for the serpent’s power is in the thigh.”

The Sefat Emet brings a teaching that the obstruction to proper bowing comes from the ‘serpent‑power’ lodged in the thigh, symbolizing a spiritual blockage inherited from primordial sin.

“And this is what our Sages said: one who does not bow in Modim—after seventy years his spine becomes a serpent.”

The failure to bow in gratitude leaves the person’s spine—the seat of life-forces—uncorrected, and it retains its aspect of the ‘serpent.’

“And when they overcame the Greek husk, they instituted praise in Modim.”

The Greek spiritual obstruction was removed, allowing the repair associated with bowing and thanksgiving to be emphasized.

“To explain the matter: our Sages said that one must bow until the eighteen vertebrae of the spine loosen.”

The full bow involves all the life‑segments of the spine, indicating a total spiritual submission.

“After the first sin of eating from the Tree of Knowledge, a portion of the Other Side became mixed into the human, as it is said: the skin of the serpent and ‘He made them garments of skin.’”

Humanity carries an admixture of impurity from primordial sin, symbolized as the ‘serpent‑skin’ garment.

“Thus every person must repair this mixture.”

Spiritual work involves purifying oneself from this inherited distortion.

“Through bowing and giving thanks before God, the eighteen vertebrae are purified and opened.”

Thanksgiving restores the natural flow of life-force through the spine.

“For this husk prevents the life-force in the vertebrae from being revealed.”

The serpent‑husk blocks spiritual vitality.

“Therefore there is bowing and straightening, as it is said: one bows at ‘Blessed’ and straightens at ‘Name.’”

Bowing negates the husk; rising reveals divine vitality.

“Bowing is the nullification of the husk and the portion of the Other Side.”

The act symbolizes inner purification.

“And straightening is the revelation of life from the Source of Life.”

Rising represents renewed divine vitality.

“Thus one who does not bow in Modim and does not repair in his life the serpent‑portion within him—his spine becomes a serpent.”

Failure to repair leaves the spiritual distortion fully intact.

“For a person must exert himself during his lifetime to nullify that serpent‑portion within him.”

Spiritual labor is required for purification.

“‘And all the living will thank You’—meaning all forms of life‑force.”

All the inner life-forces must be directed toward God.

“For the eighteen vertebrae of the spine are called the place of all human vitality.”

The spine is the channel of life‑energy.

“And the kinds of life-force are divided into eighteen parts.”

The anatomy reflects spiritual structure.

“And all forms of life‑force must submit to the Creator.”

All energies must be sanctified.

“‘Life, life, will thank You’—for in the Zohar it is said that the righteous is called ‘alive’ in both worlds.”

There are two modes of spiritual vitality.

“A person has two kinds of life: one from the World to Come, untouched by the Other Side, and one that became mixed.”

Human life contains both pure and mixed elements.

“As it is said: ‘He formed’—two formations.”

The dual nature is encoded in creation.

“‘All the living will thank You’ refers to these two kinds of life.”

Both aspects must be turned toward God.

“This is the aspect of praise and thanksgiving.”

The two modes correspond to the two life‑forces.

“And likewise bowing and straightening.”

The practice reflects the metaphysics.

“And this is the mezuzah on the right and the Chanuka light on the left.”

The two sacred markers embody the two spiritual orientations.

“And since the thigh is the end of the eighteen vertebrae, the main battle is there, and everything depends on guarding the covenant, as it is said: ‘Gird your sword upon your thigh.’”

The struggle against the serpent‑force is centered in the covenantal faculty.

“And it seems that the two Messiahs also correspond to this aspect, for ‘Messiah’ has the same numerical value as ‘serpent,’ for then the serpent’s corruption will be repaired.”

Messianic redemption completes the repair of the primordial distortion.

“And ‘life, life’ refers to the two Messiahs.”

Each Messiah embodies one of the two life-forces.

“And this requires lengthy explanation.”

The topic is vast and cannot be exhausted here.

The Sefat Emet teaches that bowing and thanksgiving repair the inner life-force distorted by the primordial serpent, aligning all eighteen segments of human vitality with holiness and preparing the world for complete redemption.
