Fixing daily attainments permanently in the heart

שני חיי שרה כולן שוין לטובה.

"The years of the life of Sarah" — they were all equal in goodness.

Chazal teach that all of Sarah's years were uniformly good; the Sefas Emes will explain how each day nonetheless carries its own distinct avodah while remaining bound to the whole.

פי' שיש כלל ופרט שבכל יום צריך לתקן דבר מיוחד כמ"ש ז"ל שס"ה ימים כל יום נגד לא תעשה מיוחדת שהיום מזכיר האדם הזהר בי ושמור לאו זה.

The explanation is that there is a general principle and a particular: that each day one must rectify a specific matter, as Chazal said that the 365 days correspond, each day to a particular prohibition, for the day reminds a person, "Be careful with me and guard this lo-saaseh."

Just as the 365 negative mitzvos align with the 365 days of the year, each day calls out its own task, so that life is made up of distinct daily avodos.

וכן להשיג ידיעת הבורא ב"ה וב"ש.

And likewise, to attain knowledge of the Creator, blessed and exalted is He.

The same daily, incremental pattern applies to acquiring fresh awareness of Hashem.

רק שצריך להיות שכל השגה שמשיג האדם כל ימי חייו.

Only that it must be that every attainment a person reaches during all the days of his life —

The key is what happens to each insight a person gains over a lifetime.

ישארו קבוע בלבו כל ימי חייו וז"ש בא בימים שכל הימים באו אתו כאחד וע"ז נאמר השמר כו' פן תשכח כו' אשר ראו עיניך שכל מה שאדם משיג ורואה בשכלו צריך שישאר אצלו לעולם כנ"ל.

— they should remain fixed in his heart all the days of his life. And this is the meaning of "he came with days" — that all his days came with him as one. And about this it is said, "Guard yourself… lest you forget… that which your eyes have seen," for everything a person attains and perceives with his mind must remain with him forever, as above.

Avraham "came with days" because every accumulated attainment stayed alive within him; the pasuk warns us not to let our hard-won spiritual perceptions fade but to keep them permanently fixed in the heart.

וכ"כ והיו הדברים כו' מצוך היום על לבבך כו'.

And so too it is written: "And these words… which I command you today shall be upon your heart…"

The Shema's instruction that the words be "upon your heart" likewise demands that what we receive be impressed permanently within.

אף שקאי על המצות מ"מ כל השגות שבאדם הוא שהקב"ה פותח לבבו.

Although this refers to the mitzvos, nevertheless every attainment a person has comes about because Hashem opens his heart.

Even though the pasuk speaks of mitzvos, the underlying truth is that every spiritual insight is a gift, Hashem opening the person's heart from above.

צריך שיקבעו בלבבו כנ"ל.

They must become fixed in his heart, as above.

And precisely because these openings are gifts, one must labor to make them a permanent fixture of his inner life.

והגם שאנו רחוקים מזה להשיג בכל יום השגה מיוחדת.

And although we are far from this — from attaining a distinct insight each day —

The Sefas Emes acknowledges that we cannot realistically achieve a fresh, unique attainment every single day.

עכ"ז כפי הרצון שבאדם עוזר הקב"ה לבטל הטבע והזמן להשי"ת.

Even so, according to the ratzon (desire) within a person, Hashem helps to nullify nature and time to Him, blessed is He.

What matters most is the sincere ratzon; in proportion to a person's yearning, Hashem assists him to transcend the limits of nature and time.

וזהו ג"כ פי' כשם שהם תמימים כך שנותיהם כו'.

And this too is the meaning of "Just as they are wholehearted (temimim), so too are their years…"

The wholeness of the tzaddikim's years flows directly from the wholeness, the temimus, of their hearts.

כי כפי התמימות שבלב נותן השי"ת שיתבטל הטבע והזמן לזה האדם.

For according to the wholeheartedness in the heart, Hashem grants that nature and time become nullified for this person.

Temimus of the heart draws down the ability to rise above the ordinary constraints of the natural world and of time.

וכ"כ לאל גומר עלי דרשו חז"ל על קידוש החודש כו'.

And so it is written, "to the Almighty who fulfills [His purpose] for me," which Chazal expounded regarding the sanctification of the new month.

The pasuk is linked by Chazal to kiddush hachodesh, where Bnei Yisrael are empowered to fix holiness within time itself.

שלהביא קדושה תוך הזמן והטבע עוזר הקב"ה לפי הרצון שבישראל כנ"ל:

That to bring holiness into time and into nature, Hashem helps in accordance with the desire within Bnei Yisrael, as above.

Through the sanctification of the months, Bnei Yisrael draw kedushah into the very framework of time — and Hashem grants this in measure of their inner ratzon.

Summary: Sarah's years were "all equal in goodness" because every daily attainment remained permanently fixed in her heart. Each day carries its own avodah, yet the deeper goal is that the spiritual insights Hashem opens within us never fade. According to the temimus and ratzon of the heart, Hashem helps a person nullify the limits of nature and time and draw kedushah into time itself.
