Hashem shields and restrains Avraham's chesed
On the verse: "Fear not, Avram, I am a shield for you (anochi magen lach)" (Bereishis 15:1).
The Sefas Emes opens with Hashem's reassurance to Avraham after the war of the kings, asking what Avraham feared and how Hashem is his "shield."
For behold, Avraham Avinu was the root of chesed, that chesed flows through the world on his account, as written in the Midrash on Parshas Chayei Sarah.
Avraham is the wellspring of chesed; it is through him that Hashem's kindness is channeled into the world.
And here he displayed great gevurah (might) and struck down all those kings; therefore he feared lest he had descended from his level, that such a judgment (din) had been done through him.
Waging war and killing the kings was an act of gevurah/din — the opposite of his midah of chesed. Avraham worried that having served as a channel for such din meant he had fallen from his madreigah as the man of chesed.
But in truth, this itself was the refinement (birur) of his midah, for chesed and love require guarding so that they do not spread out too much — as my grandfather z"l explained "How beautiful are your footsteps in shoes (na'alim), O daughter of the generous one (bas nadiv)" (Shir HaShirim 7:2), that generosity (nedivus) needs a "shoe (man'al)"; and so too it is written in the sefer Torah Or by the Rav, in his explanation of "I am a shield for you" — see there.
Far from a fall, the act of din was precisely the refinement of Avraham's chesed. Love and kindness must be "shod" — restrained within bounds — so they don't spill out indiscriminately. The Sefas Emes cites his grandfather (Chiddushei HaRim) on "footsteps in shoes" (generosity needs a "shoe"), and the Baal HaTanya's Torah Or on "anochi magen lach."
And this is what the Holy One told him — that this was from Him, in order that his midah should be guarded and refined, so that he should not be able to tolerate the wicked, as we find: "One who is merciful to the cruel will in the end become cruel [to the merciful]."
Hashem informs Avraham that the war was orchestrated from Above to guard and refine his chesed — teaching him that true kindness must not extend to the wicked. Misplaced mercy toward the cruel leads ultimately to cruelty toward the deserving.
And the matter is as it is written: "Your right hand, Hashem, is glorious in power; Your right hand, Hashem, shatters the enemy" (Shemos 15:6), and Chazal said: when Bnei Yisrael are meritorious, the "left" becomes "right."
The pasuk mentions Hashem's "right hand" (chesed) both as glorious and as shattering enemies. When Bnei Yisrael are worthy, even the "left" (gevurah/din) is transformed into "right" (chesed) — judgment itself becomes an expression of kindness.
Therefore it is a great thing that specifically through Avraham Avinu this judgment (din) was carried out against these wicked ones.
It is precisely a mark of greatness that the man of chesed was the one through whom din was executed upon the wicked — because in him the "left" was transformed into "right."
And this is the hint in the Midrash [on] "and one who sows tzedakah [has] a reward of truth (sechar emes)" (Mishlei 11:18) — see Rashi there who explains "sechar emes" like "those who make dams (sechar), the pools (agmei) of the soul" (Yeshayahu 19:10) — see there; that because the love and chesed of Avraham Avinu were in truth (b'emes), therefore he was guarded in the place where it was not fitting to act with chesed; and it is all from Him, as it is written: "He guards the covenant and the chesed for those who love Him" (Devarim 7:9).
The Sefas Emes reads "sechar emes" (via Rashi) as connected to "sechar" — a dam or barrier. Because Avraham's chesed was genuine (b'emes), Hashem placed a "dam" upon it, guarding him from extending kindness where it did not belong. This protective restraint is itself a divine chesed to those who love Him.
And this is [the meaning of] "I am a shield for you" — that the Holy One guards him and his midah, to be a shield over him, to constrict (l'tzamtzem) and to hold back the midah as needed.
"Anochi magen lach" means Hashem Himself shields and guards Avraham's midah of chesed — applying tzimtzum (restraint) to it so it flows only where appropriate, like a "shoe" that contains the foot. This guarding is the truest expression of love for one who loves Hashem.
Summary: After the war of the kings, Avraham — the very root of chesed — feared he had fallen from his level by becoming a channel for din against the wicked. Hashem reassures him, "I am a shield for you," teaching that this was in truth the refinement of his midah: chesed and love must be "shod" and guarded so they do not spread where they do not belong, for misplaced mercy on the cruel leads to cruelty. When Bnei Yisrael are worthy, the "left" (din) becomes "right" (chesed); thus Avraham's executing judgment on the wicked was itself a greatness. Because his chesed was genuine, Hashem placed a protective "dam" upon it — a tzimtzum that constrains the midah as needed — and this guarding is itself the deepest divine kindness to those who love Him.
