Nissan as the true new year of Bnei Yisrael

The Midrash on the parsha of "This month shall be for you" says: you have no other renewal, etc. (see there), on the pasuk "Yaakov He chose for Himself" — that He fixed for them a month of geulah.

The Sefas Emes opens from the Midrash that Hashem designated for Bnei Yisrael a special "month of renewal," the month of redemption, as something belonging uniquely to them.

The matter is that Tishrei is the Rosh Hashanah for the years.

Tishrei is the new year of the world's natural cycle, the head of the calendar of creation.

And from the side of creation it is the beginning for all created beings.

As the start of the natural order, Tishrei marks the origin point of everything Hashem brought into being.

But for Bnei Yisrael, Nissan is the Rosh Hashanah, for the essence of our beginning is that we were chosen to be Hashem's nation and His portion.

For Bnei Yisrael the real "beginning" is not their physical creation but their being chosen as Hashem's own people — and that began in Nissan.

As Chazal said: one who causes a person to sin does worse than one who kills him.

Chazal teach that destroying a person's spiritual life is graver than ending his physical life — proof that the spiritual identity outweighs mere existence.

So too, greater in our eyes is that the Creator, may He be blessed, privileged us to be His servants and keepers of His mitzvos.

By the same measure, the gift of being Hashem's servants who keep His mitzvos is more precious to us than the gift of having been created at all.

More than that He created us.

The spiritual selection outranks the physical act of bringing us into being.

Therefore it is written, "I am Hashem your God who took you out of the land of Mitzrayim," and it is not written "who created you," for this is the essential purpose of creation.

At Har Sinai Hashem identifies Himself by the Exodus rather than by creation, because the redemption and choosing of Bnei Yisrael is the very tachlis (purpose) for which the world was made.

And this is the meaning of "This month shall be for you" — that this renewal should be uniquely ours, more than the first renewal, which is creation.

"This month is for you" means this renewal of Nissan belongs to Bnei Yisrael in a deeper way than the original "renewal" of the world's creation.

And this renewal of geulah and the revelation of His glory, may He be blessed, through the wonders and through the Torah and mitzvos, was given only to Bnei Yisrael, as above.

The renewal of redemption — Hashem's glory revealed through the miracles of Mitzrayim and through the giving of Torah and mitzvos — is the unique inheritance of Bnei Yisrael alone.

And Bnei Yisrael, for whom this is the essence, more than creation itself.

Since for Bnei Yisrael this redemptive renewal is the main thing, more central than their natural creation.

For them Nissan is a special Rosh Hashanah.

Therefore Nissan serves Bnei Yisrael as a distinct new year of their own.

And likewise in particular, each individual — to the degree that the avodah of the Creator is more central to him — so is his judgment in Nissan, in the chesed of Hashem, as is brought in the Zohar HaKadosh, Parshas Tetzaveh.

This applies personally as well: the more a person makes serving Hashem the core of his life, the more he merits to be judged in Nissan under Hashem's chesed, as the Zohar teaches.

Summary: While Tishrei is the new year of physical creation, Nissan is the true new year of Bnei Yisrael, because being chosen as Hashem's people and being redeemed is the real purpose of creation — and the more one centers his life on avodas Hashem, the more he is judged through Hashem's chesed in Nissan.
