Light Hidden for the Righteous
Divine Light · Darkness · Chanukah · Holiness · Spiritual Renewal
“In the Midrash: ‘He set an end to the darkness…’”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash that darkness has an appointed limit.
“For darkness has a fixed time and measure with no increase, but the aspect of light is renewed daily, and time does not apply to it, for blessing is above time.”
Darkness is bounded, but divine light is continual and transcends time because blessing flows eternally.
“Only when the Other Side and the evil inclination rule is the light concealed.”
Light never ends, but it can be hidden when impurity gains dominance.
“And in the Zohar on the verse: ‘But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph and forgot him.’”
The Sefat Emet brings the Zohar’s reading of Joseph’s imprisonment and the cupbearer’s forgetfulness.
“It explains that darkness is forgetfulness.”
Forgetfulness is understood as a spiritual form of darkness.
“And light is remembrance.”
Remembering divine truth is itself illumination.
“And because Joseph said: ‘But remember me…’”
Joseph’s request triggered a spiritual consequence described in the Zohar.
“And the wicked person is not fit for remembrance.”
The cupbearer, as a wicked person, was unworthy of being the vessel of remembrance.
“Therefore the aspect of remembrance was taken from Joseph, darkness arose, and the light was concealed.”
The misuse of remembrance caused Joseph to fall back into a state of concealment.
“To understand this, consider what is written: ‘God saw the light, that it was good, and He separated…’ The Sages said: He saw the wicked unworthy of it and hid it for the righteous.”
The primordial light was hidden precisely so it could survive and shine for the righteous.
“Meaning: the light’s very preservation is through its being hidden from the wicked.”
Concealment protects holiness from misuse.
“And the Sages said: the western lamp is testimony to the world that the Shekhinah rests upon Israel.”
The ever-burning western lamp was a visible sign of God’s presence.
“One must understand: since this miracle occurred inside, how is it testimony?”
The miracle was hidden; its function as testimony requires explanation.
“The matter is that this itself is the testimony: through Israel’s separation from other nations they merit drawing down supernal light, and the Blessed One dwells among them, and consequently they illuminate the entire world.”
The inner miracle testifies to an outer illumination: Israel’s holiness enables global blessing.
“And regarding this I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, concerning the Sages’ words: the windows of the Temple were wide within…”
The Temple radiated light outward, contrary to natural architecture.
“To teach that from there light goes forth to the entire world.”
The Temple served as the source of spiritual illumination.
“Therefore it is taught that the Greeks made breaches in the Temple, saying they too could enter, and through this darkness came.”
By denying the sanctity and separation of Israel, the Greeks caused spiritual darkness.
“And they also nullified the illumination from the Israelites.”
The breach disrupted Israel’s ability to radiate divine light.
“Therefore the Holy One avenged us, as I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory: since they wished to make the private domain into a public one, the opposite occurred.”
The Greeks’ attempt to erase holiness resulted in a reversal that strengthened holiness.
“And there is illumination in these days of Hanukkah even within the public domain.”
Hanukkah uniquely brings light into outward, unprotected spaces.
“And likewise on Sukkot, when seventy bulls are offered.”
The offerings for the nations reflect Israel’s channeling of blessing outward.
“And through protection and separation for Israel, goodness naturally comes to them.”
Spiritual boundaries preserve blessing.
“And the Sages said regarding this: ‘In return for my love they hate me…’”
The nations respond with hostility despite receiving blessing.
“Therefore through their hatred, on the contrary, there is illumination from Sukkot during Hanukkah even outside.”
The outer hostility triggers an even greater outward light during Hanukkah.
“Consider well, for I have been very brief.”
The Sefat Emet closes by noting the depth of the matter.
Summary: Darkness is finite, but divine light is ever-renewing; concealment protects holiness, and Hanukkah’s power is the renewed outward radiance of sacred light despite — and because of — external opposition.
