במדרש קץ שם לחושך זמן נתן לעולם כו'.
“In the Midrash: ‘He set an end to darkness; He assigned a time to the world,’ etc.”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which teaches that God created the world with set times and boundaries, establishing limits to darkness and ordering creation with purpose.
עוד שם אשרי הגבר אשר שם ה' מבטחו ולא פנה אל רהבים כו'.
“Further there: ‘Happy is the man who places the Lord as his trust and does not turn to the arrogant,’ etc.”
This verse introduces the theme of true reliance on God, even when other influences seem powerful or alluring.
דהנה יש כ"ח עתים בקהלת י"ד לטובה וי"ד לרעה.
“For behold, there are twenty-eight times in Ecclesiastes—fourteen for good and fourteen for hardship.”
The Sefat Emet notes that Kohelet’s list of ‘times’ reflects the dual structure of creation: cycles of uplift and cycles of challenge.
ונראה שהז' פרות והז' שבלים כו' הם רמז להי"ד עתים האלה.
“And it seems that the seven cows and seven ears of grain allude to these fourteen times.”
Joseph’s dream reflects this same structure: seven positive and seven negative periods, mirroring creation’s inherent rhythm.
והיא השפע כשמתלבשת בזמן יש בה כל אלה הדרכים.
“And the divine flow, when clothed in time, contains all these pathways.”
Blessing, once expressed within temporal existence, naturally manifests in alternating forms of good and challenge.
אכן פנימיות השפע בכח התורה הוא למעלה מהתחלקות אלה העתים כמ"ש במ"א.
“However, the inner essence of the divine flow, through the power of Torah, is above the division of these times, as explained elsewhere.”
The Torah accesses a dimension of blessing that is beyond temporal fluctuation and duality.
פי' בטחו בה' בכל עת דייקא להאמין כי הגם שהשפע מתלבשת בעתים הנ"ל.
“This explains: ‘Trust in the Lord at all times,’ meaning precisely to believe that even though blessing is clothed in those times…”
Trust requires seeing through the shifting conditions of life, recognizing that divine flow remains constant beneath appearances.
מ"מ הכל בהשגחת הבורא ית' שהוא דרך התורה הפנימיות הנמסר רק לבנ"י.
“Nevertheless, everything is under the supervision of the Creator, which is the inner Torah-path given only to Israel.”
The Jewish people are entrusted with perceiving God’s unified guidance behind all temporal change.
ועליהם נאמר אשרי הגבר אשר שם ה' מבטחו ולא פנה פי' אפילו כשמתלבשת בטבע.
“And about them it is said: ‘Happy is the man who places the Lord as his trust and does not turn,’ meaning even when [the flow] is clothed in nature…”
Even when events appear purely natural, one must not shift their trust away from God.
מ"מ לא יפנו אל זה כלל.
“Nevertheless, they should not turn to it at all.”
Nature is not an independent force; it is merely a garment for divine action.
ולכן מסיים הפסוק רבות עשית כו' הוא החכמה שבטבע.
“Therefore the verse concludes: ‘You have done many things,’ referring to the wisdom within nature.”
This acknowledges the divine wisdom embedded in the natural world.
דכ' מה רבו מעשיך ה'.
“As it is written: ‘How manifold are Your works, O Lord.’”
Creation itself expresses divine multiplicity and order.
נפלאותיך ומחשבותיך אלינו הוא דרך התורה הפנימיות המיוחד לבנ"י בלבד כמ"ש.
“‘Your wonders and Your thoughts toward us’ refers to the inner Torah-path unique to Israel.”
This inner dimension is directed specifically toward the spiritual mission of Israel.
וע"ז כתיב כח מעשיו הגיד כו' והוא בכח תורה ומצות.
“And about this it is written: ‘He declared the power of His works…’ and this is through the power of Torah and mitzvot.”
Torah and mitzvot reveal the divine intention embedded in creation.
דאיתא חכמה במלואה עולה תרי"ג.
“For it is taught: ‘Wisdom in its fullness equals 613.’”
The completeness of divine wisdom corresponds to the 613 mitzvot.
וע"ז אומרין אשר יצר את האדם בחכמה ברמ"ח ושס"ה.
“And regarding this we say: ‘Who formed man with wisdom, with 248 and 365 [parts].’”
The human body reflects the same numerical structure as the commandments.
ואיתא בזוה"ק תולדות כמו שהאדם מתחלק לתרי"ג כן העולם.
“And in the Zohar (Toldot) it is stated: Just as man is divided into 613, so too is the world.”
The world mirrors the human being; both are structured according to the pattern of the mitzvot.
כי האדם עולם קטן.
“For the human being is a small world.”
Humanity is a microcosm of creation.
ולכן כתיב כולם בחכמה עשית.
“Therefore it is written: ‘You made them all with wisdom.’”
Creation and humanity are unified through divine wisdom.
והתרי"ג מצות הם קיום הפנימיות של העולם והאדם.
“And the 613 mitzvot are the sustaining force of the inner essence of the world and the human being.”
Through the mitzvot, the hidden spiritual structure of existence is upheld.
וזה מלאה הארץ קניניך.
“And this is [the meaning of]: ‘The earth is filled with Your acquisitions.’”
Every part of the world contains a point of divine connection.
פי' שנמצא דביקות בכל מקום אל הבורא ית' ע"י התרי"ג עיטין ומצות שנתן לנו הקב"ה בתורתו הקדושה.
“Meaning: cleaving to the Creator is found everywhere through the 613 advices and commandments that God gave us in His holy Torah.”
The mitzvot provide a pathway to divine attachment in every aspect of life and creation.
