Noach as Shabbos Unity

Noach · תרל"ח (1877) · Essay 2

Rashi states: Regarding Abraham it says “I walked before Him,” but Noah required support.

Abraham could advance spiritually on his own, while Noah needed divine assistance.

For the Mishnah in Avot teaches: “With ten utterances the world was created, though it could have been created with a single utterance—to give greater reward to the righteous.”

The multiplicity of utterances creates a world of complexity in which righteousness has meaning.

Then came ten generations from Adam to Noah, and ten generations from Noah to Abraham.

These cycles reflect the development and decline of humanity relative to the divine utterances.

Noah’s rescue in the Ark resembled creation by a single utterance, meaning a return of creation to its root in unity, without choice or differentiated powers—which is precisely why the world was created through ten utterances instead.

Noah is saved through a mode of divine unity that precedes the world’s multiplicity.

The wicked extinguished the light of the ten utterances, until the Flood came, and Noah survived by virtue of the aspect of the single utterance.

Corruption causes the collapse of differentiated creation, leaving only primordial unity.

Therefore the Zohar teaches that Noah corresponds to the quality of Shabbat.

Shabbat reflects the same unifying divine root that Noah embodies.

For on it He rested.

Shabbat suspends worldly multiplicity and returns creation to unity.

It is the root of creation, where on Shabbat beings unite to cleave to the root of oneness.

Shabbat is the temporal version of the Ark’s spiritual quality.

A hint is in the teaching that a Noahide who keeps Shabbat is liable, for it says “they shall not rest,” implying that Noah’s rescue was itself a form of Shabbat.

The prohibition reflects that Noah’s Shabbat-like state was exceptional, not normative.

But Abraham merited to save all the people of his generation, for he restored all aspects of the ten utterances.

Abraham repaired the multiplicity of creation, elevating the world rather than retreating into unity.

As it says: to give reward to the righteous who uphold the world.

The righteous sustain creation by engaging its diversity.

As expounded on the phrase “behibar’am” — “for the sake of Abraham.”

Abraham is identified as the sustaining force of creation.

Therefore he received the reward of all.

Abraham becomes the spiritual representative of his generation.

Noah could not save his generation, for his rescue came only through cleaving to the root, as the Midrash says: even Noah… except that he found favor.

Noah’s path was personal survival through unity, not world-rectification.

The matter is clarified by the verse: “You I have seen righteous before Me in this generation.”

God recognizes Noah’s righteousness relative to his specific era.

It should have said simply: “You are righteous.”

The phrasing invites further interpretation.

But the explanation is like the verse “And God saw… all that He made… very good,” meaning God’s providence extends to each generation.

Divine evaluation applies anew in every era.

Therefore even for generations of the wicked, God saw a place for their continued existence.

Providence provides purpose even for flawed generations.

And God saw Noah as righteous in the generation of the Flood, and placed within him the capacity to sustain future generations.

Noah becomes the seed from which renewed humanity can emerge.

Summary: Noah embodies unity and Shabbat, surviving through cleaving to the divine root, while Abraham repairs the ten utterances and sustains the world through its multiplicity.
