Noach Restoring Unity's Crown

Noach · תר"מ (1879) · Essay 2

“In the Midrash: ‘Bring my soul out of confinement… in me the righteous will be crowned,’ etc.”

The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash, which links the verse about emerging from confinement to the idea that the righteous are ‘crowned’ through a higher spiritual revelation.

“It has already been written elsewhere that Noah’s salvation came through nullifying himself to the root of Oneness, based on the Mishnah regarding the Ten Utterances… in order to exact retribution from the wicked.”

The rescue of Noah is explained as his ability to return to the primal unity behind creation, rooted in the Ten Divine Utterances; this unity served as the basis for judging a generation that corrupted the world.

“This refers to the generation of the Flood, who truly destroyed the world.”

The generation’s corruption was not abstract; their behavior dismantled the spiritual and moral structure of the world.

“For in the ten generations from Adam to Noah they lost the illumination of the Utterances, and the aspect of Noah’s Ark was the aspect of a single Utterance—it was a closed, protected place.”

The Sefat Emet teaches that the Ten Utterances powering creation dimmed over time; the Ark represented a retreat into the primal single Utterance, a sealed sanctuary preserving divine order.

“As it is written: ‘The gate of the courtyard… during the six days of labor it shall remain closed.’”

The Ark parallels the mystical ‘closed gate,’ symbolizing divine unity hidden during ordinary worldly activity.

“But Noah sought that the world return to its rectified state, as it is said: ‘To give good reward to the righteous,’ meaning that the quality of Oneness and of Shabbat could spread into the weekdays.”

Noah desired that the unity experienced in the Ark not remain isolated, but become a force that could infuse ordinary life with Shabbat-like harmony.

“And this is the meaning of ‘In me the righteous will be crowned.’”

The righteous draw their spiritual ‘crown’ from this expanded revelation of Oneness now able to enter the world.

“And the power of Oneness spread forth after Noah.”

Through Noah, unity became accessible beyond the Ark, enabling future generations to receive it.

“But the generation of the Dispersion sinned, and the power of Oneness was taken from them.”

The Tower of Babel generation misused collective unity for ego and rebellion, causing the true divine unity to withdraw.

“As it is said: ‘In the ten generations from Noah to Abraham, until Abraham came and received the reward of them all.’”

Abraham restored what previous generations lost, reclaiming the spiritual potential originally accessible after Noah.

“Meaning that the power of Oneness remained with him, as explained elsewhere.”

Abraham became the vessel through which the fundamental divine unity re-entered the human world.

Noah preserved the primal divine unity within the Ark and sought its reintroduction into daily life. That unity spread after him, was lost again by the generation of Babel, and was finally restored through Abraham, who became the bearer of the world’s original oneness.
