The Tzaddik Justifying Creation
“‘These are the generations of Noah’ — in the Midrash and Rashi: the primary offspring of the righteous are mitzvot and good deeds.”
The Sefat Emet opens by redefining “generations” as spiritual products — righteous deeds rather than physical lineage.
“Although the simple meaning is that all creatures are called the generations of Noah, for they survived in his merit.”
On the literal level, Noah’s merit sustained all beings through the Flood.
“But all of this was because he was a tzaddik.”
The root of Noah’s sustaining power is his righteousness.
“And to understand the meaning of ‘tzaddik.’”
The Sefat Emet now defines righteousness in its deeper Kabbalistic sense.
“In the Zohar: one who guards the covenant is called a tzaddik.”
The tzaddik is identified with guarding the covenant — brit — the root of life-force.
“‘Covenant’ means the inner point within every thing, which is its essential life.”
The brit is the core divine spark within creation.
“As it is written: ‘If not for My covenant… I would not have established the laws of heaven and earth.’”
Creation endures only because of this inner covenant.
“Meaning: all creation seems like a decree, for since God’s will is not fulfilled, there is no apparent reason He grants it life.”
The world appears unjustified when it does not reflect divine will.
“But there is an inner point in each thing from which honor to God emerges, as it is written: ‘For My glory I created it.’”
This inner spark justifies creation by giving rise to divine glory.
“And this point is called ‘covenant.’”
The brit is the essential spark of divine purpose.
“Therefore the guardian of the covenant is called a tzaddik, for he resolves the question and justifies the existence of created beings.”
The tzaddik reveals why creation deserves to exist by uncovering its inner divine point.
“Thus it is said: ‘A tzaddik is the foundation of the world,’ and likewise, ‘The righteous sustain the world.’”
The tzaddik channels the sustaining divine vitality into creation.
“And this is the aspect of the holy Sabbath, when every Jew rests, ceasing from his own power, and testifies that God created all in six days and rested on the seventh.”
Shabbat embodies surrender of human action to reveal divine authorship.
“And it is written: ‘To make the Sabbath… an eternal covenant,’ meaning to insert the point of Shabbat as the root of all things, so that all creation will follow this point, and then it is called an eternal covenant.”
Shabbat’s inner point becomes the axis around which all creation aligns.
“‘He was wholehearted in his generations’ means he was the essential life-force of all creatures.”
Noah held the inner point of vitality for his entire generation.
“And since the inner point of all beings was within him, he was called the perfection of all.”
Noah’s possession of the universal inner spark made him the generation’s wholeness.
“And similarly it is said of Shabbat, which is called peace, for the perfection of creation is Shabbat.”
Shabbat brings the world to completion and harmony.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the tzaddik, like Shabbat, reveals and guards the inner divine point — the brit — that gives creation its purpose and sustains its existence. Noah embodied this role for his generation.
