Voice of Yaakov as inner soul-point
Shabbos · penimiyus · wells · avodah · weekdays
It has already been written elsewhere the holy words of my grandfather z"l regarding the wells Esek and Sitnah, that they correspond to the weekdays (yemei ha'maaseh).
The Sefas Emes recalls his grandfather's teaching that the wells over which Yitzchak's servants quarreled symbolize the days of the workweek, days of struggle and friction.
And Rechovos is Shabbos — the sukkah of peace (sukkas shalom).
The well named Rechovos ("wide spaces"), over which there was no strife, represents Shabbos, the day of peace and expansiveness.
And we may broaden the matter based on the saying of Chazal: "In the wide places (rechovos) she gives forth her voice" — in the place where they broaden her (Torah), etc.
Chazal expound that Torah is acquired and "raises her voice" specifically where a person opens himself up wide to receive it — connecting the word rechovos to spiritual expansiveness.
As it is written, "The voice is the voice of Yaakov" — meaning the inner spirit (ruach ha'penimiyus) within every Jew.
The "voice of Yaakov" is not merely speech but the inner spiritual vitality, the penimiyus, that lives in every member of Bnei Yisrael.
As it says, "And He breathed into his nostrils…" — to "a speaking spirit (ruach memalela)," see there in the Targum.
The Targum renders the soul Hashem breathed into man as a "speaking spirit," showing that the power of speech reflects the divine soul itself.
It emerges that the voice is the essential spiritual vitality.
The "voice," then, stands for the core inner life-force of the soul, its spiritual chiyus.
But the hands — which are the outer garment in the body and physical deeds — they require rectification (tikkun).
By contrast, "the hands of Esav," representing the body and physical action, are the outer layer that must be refined and corrected through avodah.
And we may say that the voice is compared to the "length" of a thing, as in what is said of "the world that is wholly long" — which we explained elsewhere to mean the attachment (hisdabkus) of everything to its root until it has no interruption; this is called "length of days" (orcha de'yomin).
"Length" symbolizes the unbroken bond of all things back to their Source in Hashem — an endless, vertical connection to the root, which is the inner dimension.
However, the spreading of the inner point (nekudah) into all deeds — to draw even physical action after holiness — is compared to the "breadth" of a thing, and this is the essential avodah of those below.
"Breadth," by contrast, is the horizontal work of extending the inner holy point outward into every physical act — and this drawing-down is precisely the task of people in this lower world.
And so the weekdays follow one after another, each one having its own particular matter and unique illumination (he'arah).
The six workdays unfold in sequence, each carrying its own distinct spiritual light and avodah — the "breadth" spread across time.
And on the holy Shabbos all the roots of the days gather together; therefore it is called Rechovos.
Shabbos is "Rechovos" — the wide gathering-place where the roots of all six days are reunited and elevated to their Source.
And it appears to me that this is a deep matter.
The Sefas Emes notes that this teaching reaches into deep, hidden truths and invites further contemplation.
Summary: The wells of Yitzchak map the spiritual calendar — the contentious wells are the weekdays of struggle, while Rechovos is Shabbos. The "voice of Yaakov" is the inner soul-point, the "length" of unbroken bond to Hashem, while the "hands" and physical deeds are the "breadth" that must be refined by drawing holiness into action. On Shabbos all the roots of the week reunite in the wide, peaceful sukkas shalom.
