Wells Revealing Inner Torah

Toldot · תרמ"ח (1887) · Essay 1

Concerning the matter of the wells, it is stated in the Midrash on Shir HaShirim, in the section “Ma‘ayan Ganin,” that the word “well” (be’er) is written in the Torah forty-eight times, corresponding to the forty-eight qualities through which the Torah is acquired.

The Sefat Emet begins by connecting the motif of wells in the Torah with the forty-eight attributes listed in Pirkei Avot as the means by which Torah is acquired. Each well symbolizes a channel through which divine wisdom is drawn forth.

For the wells represent the discovery of the light of Torah that the Blessed One has truly planted within us.

The inner light of Torah is not external; it is already embedded within the soul. The act of digging wells signifies uncovering that hidden illumination.

And this is the meaning of “the Torah is acquired through them”: although all engage in Torah study, only through these forty-eight qualities is the Torah truly acquired.

Engagement alone does not suffice; acquisition implies internalization and transformation through the refinement of character and devotion symbolized by the forty-eight traits.

Like an elder who has acquired wisdom—so that wisdom has a fixed place and enduring possession within his heart.

The analogy emphasizes permanence: true acquisition means that wisdom becomes part of one’s being, not merely knowledge held in the mind.

And in the collective of Israel, these correspond to the forty-eight prophets who arose for the children of Israel, who merited in this world that the word of God be in their mouths.

The forty-eight prophets embody the same spiritual channels as the forty-eight qualities; through them, divine speech was revealed to the nation.

[And see in the Zohar, Parashat Chayei Sarah, in the Midrash HaNe‘elam, that forty-eight drops flow each day from the Garden of Eden, and the forty-eight prophets drew their prophecy from them. These illuminations are continually renewed, as it is written: “And a river goes out from Eden”—the term “goes out” being in the present tense.]

The flow from Eden symbolizes the constant renewal of divine inspiration. Just as the river perpetually issues forth, so too the light of prophecy and Torah continually streams into the world through those prepared to receive it.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the wells dug by our ancestors correspond to the forty-eight qualities through which Torah is acquired. These wells reveal the inner light of Torah already planted within the soul. True acquisition means making Torah a permanent possession of the heart, as exemplified by the prophets who drew from the ever-flowing divine source.
