Torah's Yoke Lifts Servitude
In the Midrash it is said: When the voice is the voice of Jacob, the hands are not the hands of Esau.
The Midrash teaches that when Israel maintains the spiritual power of Jacob—the voice of prayer and Torah—the physical domination of Esau loses its force.
This corresponds to the saying of the Mishnah: Whoever accepts upon himself the yoke of Torah, they remove from him the yoke of the kingdom.
The Sefat Emet connects the Midrash with the Mishnah, showing that spiritual submission to Torah frees a person from oppressive worldly rule.
And they said: “They remove” implies that even while we are servants in exile, nevertheless there is no person who does not have a moment when a spark of redemption awakens within the soul, enabling him to accept upon himself the yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Even in exile, each person experiences moments of inner freedom, when the divine presence stirs within and allows true acceptance of God’s sovereignty.
And likewise, in the collective sense, surely whoever accepts the yoke of Torah properly contributes to the redemption.
The individual’s spiritual awakening joins the greater redemption of the community; each act of sincere devotion hastens deliverance.
And from him, and through his power, the yoke of the kingdom is removed.
Through such inner acceptance, not only is he personally freed, but his merit helps lift the burden of oppression from others as well.
And so it is also with the yoke of worldly occupation.
The same principle applies to the toil of earning a livelihood; spiritual dedication transforms and lightens it.
Even one who must labor for his livelihood—nevertheless, the Holy One, blessed be He, has given us the commandment of the Sabbath, which is a day of rest.
The Sabbath provides release from worldly burdens, a divine gift that restores the soul and reminds us of higher purpose.
As it is taught: The Sabbath should be entirely devoted to Torah.
True rest is found in immersion in Torah, which renews the spirit and aligns it with divine will.
And every merchant must accept upon himself the yoke of Torah on the Sabbath day, and through this power the yoke of worldly labor is removed from him during the weekdays.
By dedicating the Sabbath to Torah, one draws spiritual strength that lightens the burdens of work throughout the week.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that when Israel’s “voice” is devoted to Torah and prayer, worldly domination loses its hold. Accepting the yoke of Torah brings inner and collective redemption, freeing one from the yokes of political power and material toil. The Sabbath, devoted to Torah, renews this liberation each week.
