Yaakov's truth transcends nature, an endless inheritance

Regarding the three wells, I wrote elsewhere that they are the aspect of the three Avos.

The three wells that Yitzchak dug correspond to the three Avos — Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov — each well embodying the spiritual trait (middah) of one of them.

Now, the middah of Avraham and Yitzchak are ahavah (love) and yirah (fear).

Avraham's defining trait is love of Hashem, and Yitzchak's is fear/awe of Hashem.

And these exist also by way of nature, for a person ought, even naturally, to love the Creator and to fear Him.

Love and fear of Hashem are accessible even on a natural level — a thinking person can come to them on his own, by way of derech eretz.

Therefore there is love and there is love.

Precisely because love can be natural, there are two kinds of love — a lower, natural love and a higher, true love.

And just as with fear, there is fear stemming from punishment and there is true fear.

So too with yirah: there is the lower fear of punishment, and the higher, true yiras Shomayim (awe before Hashem's greatness).

Therefore Avraham and Yitzchak needed tests, to clarify that their middah was essential and not merely natural; and because of this there is an admixture for the nations of the world, and from them came forth Yishmael and Esav.

Because love and fear have a natural form that even the nations share, Avraham and Yitzchak had to undergo nisyonos to prove their love and fear were essential and pure, not merely natural. This natural admixture is also why an unworthy offshoot emerged from each — Yishmael from Avraham and Esav from Yitzchak.

Therefore they said: "the water is ours."

This natural "share" is why the Plishtim could quarrel over Yitzchak's wells, claiming "the water is ours" — they too lay claim to the natural dimension of these middos.

And in truth these middos are a preparation for the Torah.

The natural love and fear of Hashem serve as a preparatory groundwork leading toward the Torah.

In the sense of what they said: derech eretz preceded the Torah.

This is the meaning that derech eretz — natural, decent conduct, including natural love and fear of Hashem — comes before and prepares the way for the Torah.

For it is the way of the world to love and fear Hashem.

To love and fear Hashem is part of the natural moral order, accessible through derech eretz alone.

But the middah of Yaakov — emes (truth) — is not at all according to nature in this world, which is a world of falsehood (alma deshikra).

Yaakov's trait of truth, unlike love and fear, has no natural counterpart in this world, since this world is fundamentally a "world of falsehood" where truth cannot arise on its own.

And it comes only through the power of the Torah.

The middah of emes can be attained solely through the Torah, which is called truth and stands above the natural order.

Therefore there is no admixture in it whatsoever, and "his bed was complete" without any blemish.

Because Yaakov's trait is wholly supernatural, it has no natural "share" for the nations to grab onto — hence Yaakov's offspring were complete (mitaso shleimah), with no unworthy branch like Yishmael or Esav.

And this is the well called Rechovos.

Yaakov's well is Rechovos — the well over which there was no quarrel, corresponding to his unblemished trait of truth.

"Hashem has made room for us."

The name Rechovos expresses that Hashem Himself granted this expansiveness — it is not a natural acquisition.

For it is a gift from Heaven.

The trait of truth, like the well of Rechovos, is a pure gift from above, not something earned through natural effort.

Therefore it is an inheritance without boundaries (nachalah beli metzarim), as Chazal said regarding the aspect of Shabbos: "the inheritance of Yaakov your father" — and this is the aspect of the neshamah yeseirah (additional soul).

Yaakov's portion is a boundless inheritance, the same boundless quality Chazal ascribe to Shabbos, which is "the inheritance of Yaakov." It corresponds to the neshamah yeseirah — the extra soul that transcends the natural self.

"Additional" — beyond the natural.

The neshamah yeseirah is called "additional" precisely because it lies beyond the limits of nature.

And this is precisely "Hashem has made room for us."

"Hashem has made room for us" is exact: this expansiveness comes only from Hashem, beyond all natural bounds.

And in truth the Avos share a single aspect.

At their root, all three Avos are one unified reality, branches of the same source.

But Avraham and Yitzchak came to this from level to level — from "ahavas olam" (worldly/everlasting love) to "ahavah rabbah" (great love).

Avraham and Yitzchak reached their lofty trait through a gradual ascent, rising from a lower natural love to the higher "great love."

And from lower fear (yirah tata'ah) to higher fear (yirah ila'ah).

Likewise their yirah ascended in stages, from the lower fear of punishment to the exalted, higher fear of Hashem's greatness.

And so is the way with every Jew, that by way of nature, through the straightening of one's middos,

Every Jew follows this same path: beginning naturally, by refining and straightening his character traits.

he afterward comes, through "not for its own sake," to "for its own sake."

Starting from natural, self-interested motives (shelo lishmah), a Jew ascends until he serves Hashem purely for its own sake (lishmah).

But the nations of the world have no aspect of "for its own sake" at all, as Chazal said: "whatever they do, they do for themselves."

The nations never make the transition to lishmah; even their good deeds remain entirely self-serving, done only for their own benefit.

Therefore even the good traits among them have no permanence.

Because their virtues stay rooted in self-interest, even the genuinely good middos of the nations lack lasting endurance.

For everything that is by way of nature is not a thing of permanence.

Whatever belongs purely to the natural order is inherently impermanent and cannot endure.

For "the heavens shall vanish like smoke and the earth shall wear out," and their end is not to endure.

The natural world itself is destined to pass away, as the navi says — proving that anything bound only to nature has no ultimate permanence.

But Bnei Yisrael, who afterward come to the way of truth through the power of the Torah — which is "water that has no end" — and who are children of the World to Come, theirs is Rechovos, an inheritance without boundaries, as above.

Bnei Yisrael ultimately rise to the supernatural way of truth through the Torah, the endless living water. Being children of Olam Haba, they inherit the boundless, enduring portion of Rechovos — the well of Yaakov that transcends nature and lasts forever.

Summary: The three wells of Yitzchak embody the three Avos. Avraham's love and Yitzchak's fear have natural counterparts, so the nations have a "share" in them (hence Yishmael and Esav, and the quarrels over the wells) — these middos are derech eretz that prepares for the Torah. But Yaakov's trait of emes has no natural basis in this "world of falsehood"; it comes only through the Torah, leaving no admixture — his bed is complete. This is the well of Rechovos, a boundless Heaven-given inheritance like Shabbos and the neshamah yeseirah. Every Jew ascends from natural, self-interested service to lishmah and the enduring way of truth, whereas the nations' good traits, being purely natural, have no permanence.
