Redeeming Hidden Holiness
Sparks of Holiness · Esau · Redemption · Spiritual Struggle
“In the Midrash: his gathering and the gathering of his sons saved him.”
The Sefat Emet opens by noting that salvation came through an act of inner and collective gathering—Jacob and his sons unifying their spiritual forces.
“As it is written: ‘In your cry, your gatherings will save you.’”
The verse is read to mean that what one has spiritually ‘gathered’ becomes the force of deliverance in a moment of distress.
“For as long as Esau still possessed some sparks of holiness, he had the power to pursue.”
Esau’s remaining holy sparks granted him spiritual vitality, enabling opposition and pursuit.
“And similarly, all of a person’s pursuits are in order to extract what belongs to him.”
Human struggles are understood as processes through which one retrieves one’s own lost or scattered holiness.
“And through his gathering together with his sons.”
This collective act consolidated their spiritual power.
“They removed from them all the power.”
They drew out all remaining sparks of holiness, leaving Esau spiritually empty.
“Consequently, he went to the land.”
Esau’s departure follows naturally once his spiritual potency is gone.
“For only straw and chaff remained, blown away by the wind.”
What remained in Esau was insubstantial, easily dispersed.
“And this is what is meant by ‘And he sat…’: a pack of dogs, and he sat among them and extracted Balaam from their mouths.”
A Midrashic image: Jacob enters hostile forces and extracts the trapped spark (symbolized by Balaam) from within them.
“And this is the meaning of ‘binding sheaves in the field.’”
Binding sheaves symbolizes gathering scattered sparks from the ‘field,’ the realm of Esau.
“Esau is a man of the field, as mentioned above.”
Thus the field imagery directly refers to Esau’s domain.
“And this is the meaning of ‘In your cry, your gatherings will save you’: the point found within the distress that belongs to a person.”
Within every trouble lies a hidden spark connected to the person, and reclaiming it brings salvation.
“And when one gathers this, he is saved.”
Redemption comes through spiritual collection—reclaiming the lost inner point.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that redemption occurs through gathering scattered sparks—both personally and collectively. Esau’s power persists only as long as he holds such sparks. Once Jacob and his sons reclaim them, his strength dissipates, symbolized by chaff blown away. Every struggle contains a spark belonging to the individual, and through gathering it, one is saved.
