Joseph’s Ascent Through Trial
Joseph · Leadership · Brothers · Spiritual Ascent
“In the verse, ‘They took him and cast him…’ ”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting the wording of the verse concerning Joseph’s brothers taking him before throwing him into the pit.
At first glance, the phrase ‘they took him’ seems unnecessary.
The verse could have proceeded directly to ‘they cast him,’ so the extra verb hints at a deeper meaning.
One may explain that they ‘took’ for themselves the aspect of Joseph and sought to fill his role, as the Midrash says: ‘They sat to eat, to distribute bread.’
The brothers symbolically seized Joseph’s spiritual function—his unique role as sustainer—and attempted to assume it for themselves.
For Joseph is the provider.
Joseph embodies the channel through which sustenance flows, both materially and spiritually.
And they rejected Joseph’s authority.
The brothers could not accept the leadership implied in Joseph’s dreams and spiritual stature.
And certainly Joseph the righteous was destined to ascend later to a very exalted level, as is known.
His future greatness was already inherent within him, though not yet revealed.
And his original place remained among them, as the Zohar says, for Benjamin filled his place.
Joseph’s spiritual position within the tribal structure was left open, eventually to be occupied by Benjamin.
For they could not follow Joseph’s higher mode of conduct, as it is written: “He brought their report.”
Joseph operated from a loftier spiritual vantage point that his brothers were unable to connect to or emulate.
And it is written: “And they could not speak to him,” as explained elsewhere.
Their inability to speak peaceably with him reflected their inability to relate to his level.
Therefore, when Joseph was later elevated…
His eventual rise required preparatory steps.
He first needed to undergo a trial, as our sages say: God does not elevate a person until He tests him.
The descent into struggle was a necessary refinement before Joseph could assume his destined greatness.
And it was a descent for the sake of ascent.
Joseph’s fall into the pit and subsequent hardships were integral to his ultimate elevation.
Summary: The seemingly unnecessary phrase “they took him” signals that Joseph’s brothers attempted to appropriate his unique spiritual role. Unable to connect to his higher path, they rejected his authority. Joseph, destined for exalted leadership, required trials that served as a descent for the sake of ascent, preparing him for his future greatness.
