בפסוק ולא יכלו אחיו כו' כי נבהלו כו' אני יוסף אחיכם אשר מכרתם אותי כו'.
“In the verse: ‘And his brothers could not… for they were startled… I am Joseph your brother whom you sold into Egypt.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that Joseph’s declaration seems to intensify the brothers’ shame by reminding them of the sale.
וקשה כי בזה הוסיף עוד לבייש אותם בהזכיר את מכירתם אותו.
“And it is difficult, for by saying this he added further embarrassment by mentioning that they sold him.”
The question: Why would Joseph evoke their sin if he wishes to reconcile with them?
אך בודאי השבטים הרגישו אז קדושת יוסף הצדיק.
“But certainly the tribes then sensed the holiness of Joseph the righteous.”
The brothers perceived Joseph’s spiritual greatness in that moment.
וז"ש נבהלו מפניו דייקא.
“And this is what is meant by ‘they were startled before him,’ precisely before him.”
Their shock came from encountering his elevated spiritual state.
והשיב להם יוסף כי בא למדריגה זו על ידי מכירתם אותו למצרים ושהם גורמים בצדקתו.
“And Joseph answered them that he reached this level through their selling him to Egypt, and that they were the cause of his righteousness.”
Joseph reassures them: their deed ultimately contributed to his ascent, not his downfall.
ובזה סר מהם הצער אשר חשבו כי אם היה אצל אביו היה גדול בצדקו יותר אבל לא כן הי' כנ"ל.
“And with this their sorrow was removed, for they had thought that had he remained with his father he would have been even greater in righteousness—but it was not so, as stated.”
He dispels their fear that they diminished his potential; in fact, the opposite occurred.
ונאמר ואח"כ דברו אחיו אתו כלפי מה שנאמר ולא יכלו דברו לשלום.
“And it is said: ‘Afterwards his brothers spoke with him,’ in contrast to ‘they could not speak to him peacefully.’”
The Torah highlights a transformation: from inability to speak to restored communication.
עתה דברו עמו וסרה מהם קנאת יוסף.
“Now they spoke with him, and the jealousy of Joseph had departed from them.”
Reconciliation removed the root of their earlier conflict—jealousy.
והאמת כי קנאה לא שייך על אדם השלם בתיקון מדריגתו ומקומו כי כ"א נברא במדריגה המיוחדת לו ומה קנאה שייך בזה.
“And the truth is that jealousy does not apply to a person who is complete in the rectification of his level and his place, for each person is created with a level unique to him—what jealousy can there be?”
Jealousy arises only when one does not recognize that every soul has its own divinely assigned path.
רק עד שלא נתקן הצדיק בכל שלימותו שייך עליו קנאה.
“Only before the righteous person becomes fully rectified does jealousy apply to him.”
Before a person attains full spiritual completeness, others may still compare themselves to him.
לכן נאמר לעתיד שיהיו מתוקנים כל המעשים וכל אחד על מקומו יבוא בשלום וסרה קנאת אפרים כו'.
“Therefore it is said that in the future all deeds will be rectified, and each will come to his place in peace, and the jealousy of Ephraim will cease.”
In the future perfected world, each soul will stand in its proper place, and jealousy will no longer exist.
Summary: Joseph reveals that his brothers’ actions ultimately elevated him, dissolving their shame and jealousy. The Sefat Emet explains that true jealousy vanishes when each person recognizes and fulfills his unique spiritual role—a state destined to be realized fully in the future.
